My favorite is:

"Pain is a big fat creature riding on your back. The farther you ride, the heavier he feels. The faster you spin, the tighter he squeezes your chest. The steeper the climb, the deeper he digs his jagged, sharp, claws into your muscles."

My favorite quote regarding cycling is one I overheard my teenage daughter utter to her friend as a couple of us were leaving on a ride one day...."my dad and his friends put on spandex and talk about suffering when they come back. They are sooo twisted!"

"All bikes are equal. Some have better engines". That is mine.

There are some really good one that are part of the french cycling culture, such as (free translation): "he's gonna pop a vein (varix)" (il va se péter une veine, pédaler à se péter les varices) Someone who's going above his capacity...

"For the first time in the history of the Hour record a weaker man has beaten a stronger man."

The technical side of the sport may be controlled, but not stopped. The search for more speed will continue by every means. There was a time, back at the beginning of the sport, or like today in mountain bikes, when the event was supposed to test the man and the machine. Then the bikes became more a neutral factor and riders dominated because they were better. Now we're headed back toward races in which the man and his (her) bike are tested. Eddy's Hour record stands as the apotheosis of human effort on a bike. We may never again be able to judge a rider's ability as we did that of Eddy Merckx in 1972. And when that judgement was made we knew we had seen the finest cyclist in his finest hour.

Paul Sherwen, explaining sprinter Ivan Quaranta's remarkable lack of climbing prowess during the 2001 Giro.

"That's was a bit harsh, Paul," was Phil Liggett's reply.

I take nothing for granted, now I only have good days... or great days.

And when you take that attitude it really is true. I think about that all the time when I'm riding and it makes difficult situations easy, big problems small and riding into a headwind fun!

Cycle Sport had a small bit on different common expressions used in the peleton. Although I forget the German expression, it translated as "There's someone in my socks."

The German's use it when they're having a bad day.

I think this was Eddy Merckx also.
