... Last year's photographer set up so the riders were back-lit, our faces mostly in shadow. That, plus the fact we were all covered with mud, and still wearing our leg-warmers, made for unappealing photos.

There are LOTS of club rides in the LA area that venture up into the SM mountains. Occasionally, they'll also venture up into the Ventura area. If you live in Ventura I'd also check with some of the local clubs up there. You should find all sorts of interesting options.

If you live in the North LA area drop me a line and I'll show you some nice climbs in the SM mountains. Probably the most "serious" is Las Flores off of PCH. A solid 4 miles at around a 9+% average grade and a good mile well above that.

Tuna is a monster climb but a bit illegal as it's a one way semi-condemmed road. I'd love to hear from anyone else who has actually ridden UP that sucker. ????
