ok, I did some more websurfing...

looks like new, redesigned 2003 XTR will be even lighter, but will continue to be 9 speeds. Wonder if the next generation DA will stick with 9 speeds, too...

oversized Al axle in standard BB shell with bearings hanging out, hence that "ugly" spider. I'll bet we'll see it in DA

I saw that, too. My first thought was how hideously ugly the shifters and cranks were. My second thought was, damn those cranks and shifters are ugly. My third thought, they'll probably sell.

Maybe it's time to finally retire my 8-speed drivetrain and get the Steelman a shiny new 9-speed system. I like the looks of SRAM's XO derailleur, but $170 suggested retail is a little pricey me thinks for a mountain bike rear derailleur.

Anywho, progress is great, ain't it?!
