Can I put Shimano 105 cogs on a XT/XTR rear hub? I want to tweak my high end ratios for my old mountain bike which I use on my indoor trainer.

it'll work fine, but you may need to shorten your chain a bit to get the shifting to work properly. if not, the chain will drag on the r/d and may bind and /or jump off. 8 speed is 8 speed and 9 is 9. you can put 9 speed on an 8 speed hub, since the spacing is the same.
Road cassettes are the cogs of choice for downhill racers. nmLeisure
