|i guy in a club that i sometimes ride with says matter of factly that when he spent a season in europe quite a few pro's were keen on the old colombian marching powder and that he has even shared some with a "pretty flamboyant and highprofile italian". no not him .... the good looking one.
his reasoning was that it left no clues or traces after a few days so not to be caught out with drug tests.
True or False?
oh..... this is not an advocation for the use of illicit and potentially harmfull substances nor is it my view on drugs in general. apart from personal use i dont care what people choose to do.

|...cocaine and strenuous exercise.
Oh, sure, you can do it. But why risk it?
I get jumpy slurping Blue Ox and eating a Power Bar. So much so that I've gotten palpatations when I've added a liter of diet cola to the mix and thrown a leg over the bike.
Mind you, I speak from experience. I have done up a reasonable amount of cocaine "recreationally" on more than one occasion.
I lay off it these days in favor of good beer, but I wouldn't use it for performance enhancement of the riding nature. Risky at best. Stupid at worst.

|mood altering substance you can imagine save meth and PCP. Mercifully, I never developed an addiction. I remember very clearly, though, going to wrestling practice in high school while high as a kite on blow. I swear that my heart felt like it was going to explode.
And it could have. When I saw the news reports on Len Bias several years back (you remember him, the basketball player who dropped dead on the floor), I thought "there, but for the grace of God, went I!"
I believe the stupidity, the arrogance, and the false sense of invulnerability that accompany youth apply (while not equally, at least similarly) to many accomplished athletes as well. There is a sense that the legal rules don't apply to them, that the health risks don't apply to their superman conditioning, and that the ends justify the means. (Believe me . . . I speak from personal and professional experience. I have represented many high profile professional athletes who used drugs throughout their careers.)
It's been many many years since I ingested anything more powerful than tequila. I suppose I am glad that I had the experiences I did, because they helped shape who I am today. But I wouldn't go back to that lifestyle for all the money in the world. And I certainly wouldn't exercise on that $hit. It can kill you.

|And like in that song nobody knows by Pulp: "hoooo-hoooo when you come downnnnnnn..."
Apparently cocaine is easily tracable in the system even a month after use if not more (can be detected through hair test!)
Powerful local anaesthetic, stimulant.
Your last paragraph says it all, Geoff. Same here.

|when i heard his story i thought it was odd that they could detect all manner of things with drug tests but not coke. it just sounded odd and i wanted to call the storytellers bull$hit but didnt know whether it was traceable.|

|from what i've heard anyway...not many places will do a hair test. most just make you pee in a bottle. pot on the other hand can be detected for a month or so after smoking it in a pee test as it stays in your fatty tissue longer.|

|I can't remember the exact details, but in a back issue of Cyclesport they talked about some of the Festina riders using a mixture of coke, speed, etc. I remember reading it and being amazed. It was probably a year to year and a half ago.|

|Cocaine is one the UCI banned substances list. Pot is not, with one (hilarious) exception: it is banned for downhill mountain bikers.
So road riders can smoke as much as they want, downhillers have to go without...
