Handlebar size(3 posts)

Had my wife measure my shoulders (as show in the latest Bicycling issue) and I come up with something like 35cm. From the reading I've done it looks like 40cm bars are considered "small". I currently have 42cm bars on my bike and I'm wondering if they are too wide for me, or did I not meaure properly. I do have a small build (5'7" 150lbs).
I'm curious as to what size bars others my size are running.

a 42 bar is probably okay. people prefer different things.
if you are measuring outside to outside, your bars are really a 40 center to center. all companies seem to measure differently. i'm 6'1" and weigh 180. i ride a 46 outside to outside because it's more comfortable and allows me to open my chest a bit to get more air. if it feels too narrow, try something a bit wider or vice versa.
You measured wrongKerry

It's highly unlikely that someone 5'7" has shoulders only 35cm wide. Depending on your manufacturer, your 42 could be someone else's 40 - TTT and ITM measure to the outside and so are 2 cm different than most others. Key question: How do your bars feel now? If you feel like your hands are too far apart and you wouldn't experience any chest constriction with narrower bars, consider some 40s (based on the same measurement). I suspect you're on the right size already.
