Trouble replacing road stem(2 posts)

Trouble replacing road stemUCI-Jonas

I'm having trouble getting my stock road stem off my drop bars to replace with another. I can't seem to get the stem past the turn/buldge just above where to shifters go. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

1. Use lacquer thinner or something similar to clean any stickum off of the bar.
2. Remove the handlebar clamp bolt completely. Find something to wedge into the clamp to hold it open as wide as possible.
3. If you rotate the stem 90 degrees to one side or the other, it will usually be easier to slide around the bend.
4. Persevere. You know the stem went off without scraping up the bar, it will come off the same way.
5. Expand your vocabulary. There are certain words that only bike mechanics are allowed to say. Those words should be reserved for tasks like this. Good luck.
