Anyone have any experience with Pearl Izumi's new road shoes? They're pretty spiffy-looking, but I was wondering how they compare in terms of comfort, roominess in the toe box, etc. Thanks for the info!

Caveat: I tried 'em on but HAVEN'T bought or ridden in them.

Funny that you think they are spiffy. To me, their homely looks is why I bought Northwave. But they did feel pretty good on my feet. I have a very wide forefoot and wear a 41.5 or 42 in European sizing. Carbon soled, moderate (though not cheap) pricing.

I saw somewhere that the PIs are supposed to have a wider forefoot, but I also found its looks weird. And they had exaggerated tread in very specific locations which I'd be concerned about popping or chipping off eventually. But I think they're getting pretty good initial reviews.

How is the heel in the Northwave? I want a wider forefoot but not a wide heel. Also, how does its sizing compare to other shoes? Finally, is Northwave good with Speedplays? Thanks.

The width is definitely in the forefoot; the heel feels pretty standard (unlike the Sidi mega which just seemed huge all over, and though you can cinch the front down, you can't cinch the heel snug, obviously).

I don't know about the Speedplay compatibility, sorry. I'm an old-fashioned SPD type.

I have a pair of evolutions and this seems right to me--a bit extra width (and overall volume) in the forefoot, and a normal (not especially wide nor especially narrow) heel. Look pedals--cannot help with the speedplay question either.
