I have a friend who is looking for a road bike to commute on and his budget is around 700-1000. What suggestions would you have? This would be money spent on the bike and does not include the accessories.

Are bikes in that price range durable? (ie, lower end shimano equipment)

Thanks in advance.

check out the new Bicycling Magazines buyers guide. They have alot of bikes in that price range. His best deal is probably a closeout 2001 model.

He could get a very good frame and components by knowing the correct size frame of each MFG he is interested in that would fit him, a 105/Campy offering or better component group and then shopping the used market until he finds what he needs. Either this site or clubvelo.com or ebay he could find a deal to squeall about.

Near the end of each year, $1199 or so gets you full Ultegra group on a nice Specialized or Cervelo or something similar. Awesome deals at the larger chain stores when they want to clear inventory for the next model year's arrival.

A upgradable aluminum framset, open pro wheelset, 105 components...the more you look the better the mix. best deals are on closeouts.
