What bike would you want ... FREE?(25 posts)

What bike would you want ... FREE?Elefantino

Geez. Two days away from this place and it turns into the "save the whales" forum.

Anyway, just entered the Bicycling "Win Any Bike In This Issue" contest, and I gave both my entry and my choice a great deal of thought. (Please ... spare me the flames about Bicycling or its contest.)

I settled on the Merlin Agilis. ($3,375).

I went with the Merlin because I wanted a ti bike and the local Merlin dealer is a friend of mine and would probably be the one to build it. I could have gone for the Litespeed Ultimate ($5.343), but I felt the Merliln, even with Ultegra (or, now, is that especially with Ultegra?), is more my speed. (Also spare me the flames about how I could have taken the Litespeed, sold it and bought 1 1/2 Merlins.)

And of the more expensive bikes, I didn't go with the Trek 5500 ($3,900) or the Specialized S-Works E5 ($4,110) because I already have them (well, a 5200 and and S-Works M4), passed on Klein Quantum Pro Carbon ($3,600), C'Dale R4000 SI ($3,629) and De Rosa Merak ($3,895) because I don't want another alu, and nixed Kestrel 300EMS ($3,880) because I don't want another carbon.

Of all the bikes available in the mag/rag, and only those, which would you choose?

PS: In this case, "buy used" is not an acceptable answer.
um ... not a C-40? or a Softride?weiwentg

in my case, a Seven Axiom, custom made, compact frame style. full Dura Ace. and a pair of Zipps with Crono hubs.
Sorry. Not available. Only those in the mag. (nm)Elefantino

Yes it ispmf1

Not that I subscribe to this dumb magazine ... they send it to me free because I'm a Team Performance member ... but yes, they have a OOF C-40 frame listed for $3800. Last bike in the road bike section.

There is enough interesting writing in this magazine to last an entire bowel movement.
No it isn't.Elefantino

He wanted a Seven Axiom. This year's Seven offering was an Alaris, the "cheap" model.
Thought you meant the C-40pmf1

Who would want a Seven Axiom anyway?
well, an Alaris would do :) nmweiwentg

but no Axiom...only a low end Seven (nm)ColnagoFE

You get Bicycling free as a TP member?ColnagoFE

I'm a member and I don't get Bicycling for free...what gives????
Mar 4, 2002 8:51 AM
I get it sporadically. Maybe its because I actually used to subscribe about 8 years ago when it was a better magazine. They just show up in the mail, often with Performance flyers. I don't keep track, but I doubt I get every issue. You're not missing much.

I somehow end up with a new 'free' subscription to Bicycling. I got 4 issues of the rag this month. I can't get them to stop. I'm tempted to start buying stuff w/ fake names and addresses to avoid the monthly onslaught.

dont tell cosmicallyconscience otherwise well end up with post that goes for the rest of the week how we need to not only boycott bicycling magazine for wasting paper, but how webzines are just a lesser evil.

which is all true but it WONT happen as cosmicallyconscience WONT post this topic here as it IS actually cycling related and would break with his modus operandi.

funny heh...

De Rosa Merak. I saw one at a shop a few months ago and it was absolutely beautiful. I keep thinking about it when I think about bicycle perfection.

Besides, I have a steel bike that I love...

Another option would be a Look KG381i in CSC black...

I saw the issue and I had some trouble chosing. The c40 looks like a winner but it's just the frame. The Ultimate might be my selection just because it's got a full Record group. Besides, I always wanted a bike with flames. I don't like the short wheelbase, however.

Actually, I may select the most expensive mountain bike ($6000?) and sell it with all the components on ebay. Take the cash, build the bike I want and buy a "new" used car with a big trunk for all my rigs.

Discalimer: Used car will in no shape or form be a gas guzzling SUV. Wouldn't want to offend the board, you see.

Haven't seen the list yet, but last year I went for the Colnago Dream Plus.

I had no expectations of winning last year, but I did put a lot of thought into it. It was supposed to be an original essay, but the guy who won totally plagiarized his entry from an episode of South Park. The Chewbacca Defense.

This year I'm not even going to bother. Fair is fair, but that was a scam.
I chose the C-40 Baby!ColnagoFE

Klein Q-Pro Carbon, I guess. I would have purchased a new one but it's a little pricey for me. Don't know about the cf seat stays, here to stay or just a passing fad?

You're talking free? Anyone of them would be fine...

The Litespeed Vortex or the Kestrel 300 EMS. I do like Trek products, but if I'm getting the rascal for free, D@MN THE TORPEDOES!!!

Since they didn't have a Richard Sachs...

C-40, Seven, OLCV all too predictable and boring.
