My LSB told me there is a whole sub-culture out there of people who have given up on trying to fix the problems with their D/A and Ultegra shifters, and have learned to shift with the pinkie finger while stablizing (sp?) the brake lever with the middle finger. Anyone out there knows about this? I will need to learn, since my shifter crapped out....

After checking the above website and the problem persists then it's most likely that the little screw on the back of the lever has fallen out. I've written about this many times - a search here will locate responses. If it hasn't gone on too long you can probably replace the screw and you'll be back in business. If you're unlucky then things inside the mechanism have shifted and your two options are to replace or rebuild. The second option is very difficult. Go to www.shimano.com - Urup section - for the PN of the sub-assembly.

I'm constantly amazed at the ability of this board to answer my questions. But now, it appears to be working on a telepathic level. I just noticed this screw was missing the other day and was going to ask if anyone knew the size. How cool is that?

As an aside, sometimes the problem occurs with the screw still there.
