|When you say "near the beaches", I'm assuming you'll be on Tybee Island or near there. Wilmington Island? Downtown?
I'm from Savannah, though I don't live there anymore. Usually what I do is go out towards Skidaway Island, Isle of Hope and the Landings area and ride there. There's a bike lane on some of the roads and you're likely to see others riding. Riding from town to the beach (Tybee) is pretty harrowing given the amount of traffic and all the narrow bridges.
Another option is going out Hwy 17 N. and finding some open country roads that way. Or out past I-95 and Hwy 280.
Check w/ some of the bike shops too.

|I lived in Savannah for several years and did a lot of biking there. The roads to and from the beaches get a lot of traffic and are narrow. A well known biker in the area was run over and killed while commuting to work at Skidaway Island while I lived there. Of course, that could happen anywhere, but we preferred riding on the country roads west of Savannah. I would check with the local bike clubs or shops in the area for good routes. |
We also used to do a lot of riding at Hunter Army Air Field, which has a 10-mile loop road around the perimeter of the base. Very little traffic and flat, great for time trialing. I'm not sure whether they still allow bikers on the base to ride, however, given the current concerns over terrorism and security, but it's worth checking out.

|Here's a link to the bike club in Savannah. They've got a ride calendar posted, and you may be able to contact them about other routes. |
