What is Gear Development? and why should I be concerned...fretking

As part of a bike purchase deal, I received an Ergobrain computer. One of the screens shows "gear development" but the manual gives no other info. I'm new to road biking.

G.D is the distance the bike advances per crank revolution. In meters, I think. It is the manual, but very limited mention.
Isn't that what Sheldon Brown uses instead of gear inches?Retro

There's an essay about it in the new Rivendell Reader, and I assume more at Sheldon's site, www.sheldonbrown.com. I only skimmed it, and I can't remember why he likes it better than gear inches.
