|I just got OLN and was checking out their website for stuff, when I read an article on the 2002 season by Bob Roll. Below it was "Bob Responds to More of your Email", I've copied it for your reading pleasure:
Mary Kathryn F. :
Hi OLN staff,
First, I want to thank you for the incredible coverage you have given to cycling. You are the first team to cover cycling as it should be covered. With that said, I recently saw the page with Bob Roll's responses to e-mails. Showing both positive and not-so-positive feedback is great. However, I feel that someone needs to monitor Bob's responses. (I wouldn't think you'd have to do that for a professional media personality, but clearly you do.)
Responses such as the following are completely unprofessional and uncalled for:
"Yes, I am fat. Too bad there is no diet for stupidity. I also wish OLN would bring in some younger and more exciting commentators like your sister. At least I can grow some facial hair. Since when did un-weaned sniveling pimps get access to the Internet?"
Although some of the e-mails are from very small-minded individuals, you can always expect that when you ask for feedback from the general public. However, Bob needs to handle these situations professionally.
Regardless of what I thought about Bob before, reading such inappropriate responses has made me lose respect for the man as a journalist. Bob can certainly have a fan site, where people who like (or dislike) him can write to him. The OLN site, though, isn't the place for it.
OLN has done something incredible with its coverage of cycling, especially the Tour de France, the Giro, and the Vuelta. Don't compromise on your journalistic integrity.
Dear Mary Kathryn,
I can assure you that my responses are carefully monitored by a crack staff of First Amendment experts at OLN's legal department. Actually, because of my prodigious blaspheming, our legal dept. is kept at maximum alert every time I am sent a bundle of e-mails to respond to.
It grieves my heart to know you have lost respect for me. In the future, I will accept unprovoked attacks against my character with humility and spineless acquiescence.

I really miss Bob's articles in Velo News.
I don't miss the chops!

and Sheldon Brown as his Vice?
wow two men that can think of their own accord and tell a story! press conferences would be the highest rating thing on TV.

|now you bring up a very interesting (albeit rather sick) thought - Presidential use of zefals as oppose to cigars.|

|He makes the coverage good, and the e-mail responses are right on the money. I like the way he does not suffer fools. It's incredible some of the bs these morons try to lay off on him, only one of whom is 'mary kathryn'! Go to the OLN website and read both sets of mail and replies. He really knows his stuff. He's been there. He's fun to watch -- and read.|

|Although Bob Roll does and should have the right to defend himself, Mary Kathryn does have several very salient points. It always is more beneficial in the long run to take the highroad as Mr. Roll represents himself, OLN TV and in his own right is a Cycling celebrity. Even though cycling is a high energy sport and emotions run high, in the US, Road Cycling is not a hooligan sport, it's perceived to be a cut above, spitting in the umpires face or having two teams empty the benches to duke it out in the street, that's not the perception most Americans have, no matter how many fights Chippo gets into in a season. E-mail attacks are unfortunately all to common as people think they have no face to face accountability. I hope in the future such petty e-mail will simply be dismissed as the vermin who write it.|| |
