First road bike.....sbaryenbruch

I have a friend who is currently shopping for what would be his first road bike. I am trying to help him track down a good bike for $1000 or less. What is out there in that price range that anybody recommends?
Thanks,
Scott B.
I've never tried it, but I heard that the Raleigh 700 (?)morrison

or something to that effect, is a good bike and it's somewhere around $700. If it's true, that's a great value.

I bought a GT ZR2.0 frame, headset, and fork from chucks bikes for $295 and built it with a full ultegra group with the exception of 105 brake calipers, Dura ace chain, and a CODA expert crank, and then added shimano r535 wheels, TTT forma sl bars, ritchey pro stem, american classic seatpost, sdg bel air saddle, and michelin Axial pro tires, I used a set of mountain spd paedals that I had laying around, and used Cinelli cork tape. Complete weight ended up being 18lbs. Rode it for the first time last Sunday, did 50 miles, rides nice, climbs good, and I saved a bunch over what a bike with a comparable group would cost.

For this amount of money, you can get an excellent used bike, probably only a year old. It will be far better than anything you could get new off the floor at a bike shop.
