Inseam Or Saddle Height(6 posts)

Inseam Or Saddle HeightWild Bill

I am mixed up when reading the posts on this web site that involve "inseams".
Which measurement are they giving, inseam or saddle height?
Example...5'10 with a 31in. inseam on a 56cm. bike! (This can't be possible unless it is a TREK frame and he likes the top tube tight in his crotch!)
This 31in. inseam must be the sum after multiplying by .883 making it his saddle height?
This is why I am confused........I ride a 51cm. bike (52 if it were a TREK) and my inseam is 31.750in. and I am 5'7 tall.
If I take that 31.750 and multiply by.883 I get my saddle height of 28.03 inches.
So when talking about my inseam do I say it is 31.750 or 28.03 inches?
This is a big difference when looking for the right size of frame.
This could mean 3 bike sizes!

Inseam is top of your crotch to floor. FYI, I'm 5'7" with a 30.25" inseam and I ride a 51cm(center to center) frame.

Wild Bill,

The .883 multiplier is used as a starting point for saddle height, when measured from the center of the Bottom bracket to the top of the saddle. So get a tape measure, start at the bolt that holds your crank assy on, drag out 28.03 inches and it should to close, to the top of your saddle.

Now if we convert your inseam to cm it would be 80.645cm aprox.
inseam should not be the determining factor for a correct bike size but one of many.
Wild bill, have you ever been to the Wrench Science site they have a great bike fit session that's fun to play with it will help you understand some of the dimensions used to calculate frame size. It's just a tool, something to play with certainly not a definitive source. http://www.wrenchscience.com

This posting was not about me.

These are the people who are confused.
But thank you all for your responce, it is nice to know some people out there are trying to help.

A guy with a 31" inseam might have some problems straddling the horizontal top tube of a 56 cm. frame, but could still be quite comfortable riding it. His seatpost would be short and he'd have a comfortable reach to the handlebars with a short stem, which he could easily jack up to saddle height.
