|Why celeste green, of all colours - what's the story? I'm hoping for one of those Italian "same colour as the eyes of Benito Bianchi's stunning 21 yr-old daughter" type stories, but I suspect the truth is far more mundane...|

|This is the story according to Eduardo Bianchi's biography.
In the earliest days of bicycle racing, amatuerism was the name of the game. Competitors were not allowed to accept any outside help (some poor guy was DQ'd from the TdF for letting a boy HELP him fix his bike). This included sponsorships of any kind. So their bikes couldn't have a brand name on them. Bianchi thought to himself: if I can't put my name on them, I'll paint them a very distinctive color, and then everybody will know that I built the bike.
He came up with celeste, and the color became synonymous with the Bianchi brand.
|I see - so the actual colour was random - left over paint?nm||Muncher.|

|He couldn't go painting them bright red. He needed to come up with a 'different' color. So the process couldn't have been entirely random, but it was to a degree. For what its worth, the actual color of celeste has varied a little bit over the years (it's a little more pale now than it used to be).|

|After World War One, supplies were scarce. Bianchi bought all the surplus military paint and that color was celeste.|

|Actually the true party line is it's the color of the eyes of the Queen of Italy durring his time. I think he built a bike for her and taught her how to ride. He spent alot of time in the castle there. Although any claim of any kind of an afair is denied he certainly was infatuated with the young beautifl Queen.|

|...according to Bianchi's site, all rumors may or may not be true:
One of those "lost in the mists of antiquity" stories. Better that way (IMHO).
Celeste is one of the few colors that looks better the older it gets.

|Right it has changed over the years. Celeste actually means sky I think as in celestial.|| |
