i am getting a niggling ache at the
rear of the right thigh, a couple of inches
above the short line
it eases after about an hour of riding
does anybody else have any experience of this problem

Hard to say, but the only thing I've had that's similar turned out to be a sciatic nerve inflammation. If that's what it is, and if it progresses, eventually it can run from your butt all the way nearly to your knee.
Aspirin or ibuprofen (not Tylenol) may help. Stretching didn't give me any relief (but I'm not very good at it and don't work very hard). Changing saddles, or the angle of the saddle you have, might work. Or a few days' rest.

Sounds like a prime suspect. I discovered this nerve last year, thinking it was muscle. Pain started in lower back, and worked it's way down my right leg all the way to my toes, which felt "tingly." I eased up exercising it, stayed on ibuprofen, and it healed in two or three weeks. That's the main nerve that goes down each leg, to which the other nerves bundle up. Good luck, if that's what you have!
