Who would you ride with?Tig
Jan 18, 2002 11:27 AM
A topic for the sake of fun and fantasy: Who, past or present, would you like to spend an afternoon riding with?

For me it would be a difficult to choose from so many riders that I would like to meet or just plain respect. Spending an afternoon riding and chatting would be a wonderful day to treasure.

From the past, I'd want to ride with Major Taylor. To put a fun twist to the ride, I'd put him on something recent just to watch his reaction.

The choice among living riders/racers gets really tough. Armstrong, Merckx (has he ridden at all lately?), Hampsten, Kelly, Roche, Ulrich, Zabel, LeMond, Museeuw, Tchmil, Cipollini, and Jalabert to name but a few. Yep, too tough to choose from, even from such an incomplete list. I'll narrow it down to Sean Kelly or Andy Hampsten.

You need to get thee to the LAF Ride for the Roses. If you are a peloton project member, Lance, Merckx, Indurain, once upon a time Lemond, Kelly once, other large name former pros go on a photo op tune up ride on Saturday AM of the LAF weekend. You don't get to talk too these guys too much but everyone wants to get a pic of them blowing by a TDF winner or stage winner.

I'd like to see Shaun Palmer get on a road gut, tatoos and all.
Jan 18, 2002 11:38 AM
I'd ride with any of those guys, but if you are going to chat, I would suggest another name: Frankie Andreu, because he is a pretty good story teller. He seems to know all the gossip and behind the scenes stuff for some really great races.
I'll second that.Sintesi

I was addicted to his diary entries for a couple seasons at least. He should cultivate a raconteur persona a la Bob Roll and sell books.

Without a doubt: my wife. We both got bikes around the same time and while I developed a passion for it she, on the other hand, has a life! We've gone out very few times together. A day spent with her riding, chatting, etc. is stuff dreams are made of and I hope to work on making them more of a reality come spring.

Same same same same.

I am so with you. No hesitation on this one. My wife Catherine and me.

I've had a stupid childish dream of me and her in a breakaway. Together and equally working real hard, yet smiling.

Two years after we are planning a bike tour business together. Weird.

My husband is my favorite person to ride with. I don't want to ride with any other. It's fun to spend the day with him riding and chatting. This year, we're gonna ride the STP in one day together!

Einstein. I would like to take my cruiser and slowly pedal with Albert and discuss curved seat stays and curved space. He reportedly did some of his best thinking while riding his bike.

Steve Bauer. He was the first rider that got me interested in road riding/racing. I wonder what he's up to now?
Also Alison Sydor, she may not have Pezzo's personality but she can sure hammer.
Ok and Lance just so that there not all Canadian.

For Cyclists, Merckx because he'd be up for a beer or 3 afterwards.

Non-Cyclists, Salma Hayek because she is hot. ;)
Don't forget Bob Roll (it would be an entertaining ride)xx

My best bud back home in Maine. We grew up learning to ride MTBs together but have gone in different directions since going to college. Good conversation and good for a six pack or two after the ride.

We could get in a few miles.

I imagine DINOSAUR could keep me entertained.

I expect that sooner or later I will ride with bill, Greg Taylor, Sam DC and I've probably already ridden with cyclopathic. Know I've ridden with Humma. May be we will all get together next fall and ride on the Eastern Shore with Len J.

Wouldn't mind discussing the merits of Gios and Bianchis with tarwheel and single speeds vrs fixed with Js Haiku Shop.

Woof the dog could keep the varmits away for me, I'd be willing to keep the bugs off him.

TJeanloz and Ahimsa ought to make for a nice peaceful ride while discussing bikes and shops.

Really would like to ride in the high desert with breck on a nice full moon night.

Be nice to do Elefantinos first ride back if he leaves that pink jersey at home.

Spinchick if she brings the L'il Biker and New Biker too.

But I gotta go meet Miss M after work....see ya!

I appreciate the sentiment. Actually, I was thinking the same thing. I'd like to ride with Dog if I'm ever in Fresno (although I don't think I could keep up with him for long). MB1 and Humma if in the DC area -- and that could be arranged as it's only 4 hours from Raleigh. Haiku in Elvisland. Nigel in England. Elephantino on a trainer or spin class. My brother Bikerduder in Chicago (along with Kristin if she could stand us). Morey in Florida. PsychDoc in Valdosta, Ga (where I used to live).

Let me know if you try to arrange another RBR alumni ride some weekend. It would be worth the drive up to DC. Sorry, I don't do single speed.

As far as pros and celebs go, it would be fun riding with Robin Williams, who is a big biking fan. And of course, Lance, who I admire much more after reading his book -- and who my wife would love to meet, having gone through the whole cancer ordeal at the same time.

Believe it or not, I actually would like to ride with grzy and maybe drink a few beers. I have this impression that he's really just this nice old guy with an alter-ego that comes out at times when he's typing at the keyboard.

had a chance to ride with Hampsten and talked to him for a while about riding in Italy (I've done a decent amount of riding there). Very cool, down-to-earth guy and one of my all-time bike heroes. Also ran into Eric Heiden on a ride and rode with him for a while--very mellow, nice guy (this was during his time with 7-11). Yeah, Sean Kelly and Jalabert seem like they'd be cool to ride with, too. I'd probably put John Tomac on the list, also Julie Furtado. Hey, Pantani, too!
many of which I almost added to the listTig
Jan 18, 2002 1:50 PM
I considered more names but had to draw the line somewhere. I almost added Heiden, Tomac, Andreu, Bauer, and Phinney.

One of the most famous riders I have ridden with was Julie Furtado while in Winter Park, CO, just a month before her first world title. Well, at least I can say I rode with her until the nordic trail went skyward. Boom, off she went with Susan Debiase right behind, leaving all us poor mortal men in their dust! I got to talk with her a few days later. She was a little shy at first, but extremely nice.

Jeannie Longo was by far the most famous, successful cyclist I have ever ridden with. She is first class, all the way.
No question....Maynard Hershon.Cima Coppi

He is far more intellectual than any professional cyclist on the circuit. The stories he tells are classics.

My wife and me on the open road doing a century........Like that will ever happen. I've been trying for 2 years now. I certainly would not want to ride with one of cycling greats.

Several catagories:

1.) Bike related. Andy Hampsten, Lemond Or Kelly.
2.) Interesting people. Cat Stevens, Nelson Mandela, Robert Kennedy, or Victor Frankl.
3.) Other Athletes. Emil Zatapec (sp?), Steve Prefontane, Muhammed Ali, or Curt Flood.
4.) Just to get to know & have a blast. Robin Williams.
5.) More likely to happen. Ride with several members of this board.

Jacques Anquetiel, Theo de Roy (a great domestique - a nice guy you could talk to on a long ride), Sean Kelly (though I doubt he'd talk much), Lance, Ulrich.

I'd want to ride with Lon Haldemen (sp?). He was winning his first RAAM when I got my first road bike back in the late 70's. Though I imagine it wouldn't be much of a ride. He strikes me as a pretty quiet guy and even if I could keep up I'd be so out of breath I couldn't talk to him anyway. Can you imagine, 2000 miles just watching his wheel in front of you. Still, he is perhaps the epitomy of what I would want to be as a bike rider if I didn't have any restrictions. Not to mention any guy that rides a Brooks saddle soaked in motor oil can't be all bad.

If anybody knows who she is riding for I would love to find out. I met her in 1986 at the Nevada City Classic when I was in highschool. I fell in love then, and tried to follow her career since. Runner up would be Paolo Pezzo. If I remember right she married pro cyclist Todd Whitehead. Any new info would be great. She is the beautiful woman in the middle.

My friend Gord who lives up in Vancouver B.C. We have been corresponding via emial for over a year and this summer he is supposed to visit us along with his family. We have even exhanged maps of our ride routes. One advantage of using forums like this is that you do actually end up meeting people. However I need to get serious about my training or he will drop me on the climbs, of course he has 15 years of age on me (in his favor)...

Cyclist of the past...Fausto Coppi, although I can't speak a word of italian. He inspired me to get back into cycling.

Greg Lemond, Andy Hampsted, Lance Armstrong

And of course Eddie Merckx, if I could understand a word he said with his think accent...
