Problem With My Chain or Bottom Bracket?(5 posts)

Problem With My Chain or Bottom Bracket?BikeUSA
Jan 1, 2002 11:41 PM
I had my bike in a workstand today and noticed when I would pedal it hard and let go of the pedal the cranks would continue to spin. If I would stop the cranks with my hand and then let them go, they would start spinning again. What would cause this and how can I fix it?

This is usually a result of the freehub being too stiff. If it isn't properly greased, it will make the pawls harder to move and cause the problem you are seeing. Try taking the freehub apart and lubricating it, or have LBS do it if you aren't comfortable doing it.

Freehub probably needs lubed up or if it gets real bad, you could need to replace the froze up one.

...Morningstar makes a really neat little tool that you can use to lube Shimano (or compatable) freehubs. You take the cassette off, strip the axles and bearings, and the tool plugs into the freehub/cassette carrier. You pump lube (Finish Line Cross Country chain lube works great)into an orifice on the top of the tool and the pressure runs the lube through the freehub bearings and out the back of the cassette carrier. It lubes the bearings and flushes out any crap that is lurking in there... Third Hand carries it. Worth the money.
