Annual milage totals? Best ride of the year?(38 posts)

Annual milage totals? Best ride of the year?Pack Meat
Dec 31, 2001 8:37 AM
I know this was done in September but Ive put on a lot of miles since then.

The grand total for the year is approximately 5450 miles. This includes on and off road miles but doesn't include time on an indoor trainer.

I'd have to say that my best ride of the year was the Triple Bypass. 120 miles over three high mountain passes with about 12000 feet of climbing. At the time I think I said I would never do the ride again but despite the temperature dropping to about 50 degrees and the rain that soaked me to the bone and made the coldest I have ever been in my life it was a good ride. It turned into a real adventure. And you can't beat come down the mountain at 45 to 50 mph while passing bikers and cars going around hair pin turns.

Happy New Year!

Total mileage was 5219. My goal was 5200 miles or 100/wk.
It's hard to say what my best ride was. I enjoyed them all.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do for a goal next year. I don't race and I don't want to set just a mileage goal. I'm leaning toward setting up a 4-5 day tour in the summer.

6913 miles excluding today (12/31/01). And yes, I'm planning on getting out in the cold rain today and putting a dent in the remaining 83 miles. This figure includes everything ridden for one year on three bikes (two road, one mountain) and the indoor trainer.

Shooting for an honest 10,000 miles next year.

Cheers

miles short of Miss M.

The best rides were the unexpected ones. Stopping for lunch at an elegant restaurant. Riding an extra few hours just because it was such a nice day. Seeing the sun rise and set during the same ride. Haleakala downhill. Haleakala uphill. Riding in 2 feet of snow. Getting passed by the wife on singletrack. Single speeding. Ahh...anything on the tandem.

But the year ain't over yet, who knows what fun we will have this afternoon.

15,250 so far.

Tonights ride was nice. The C&O canal was pretty much frozen over, the Potomac is starting to freeze and it was a pretty sunset.

See you next year.

My total was 6,257.81. I didn't ride much in September except for a double metric. All were best rides, except the double metric.

It definitely makes the list and was my longest ride of the year. This year was all about consistency for me. I had few weeks under 140 miles and few weeks over 200 miles. Motivation to ride was never lacking. I can think of only 2 or 3 days the entire year when I was able to ride but didn't. Riding seems to get more enjoyable every year. I only hope the trend continues. Oh and Happy New Year!

I'm going to figure it more precisely next week, but I can comfortably say that I averaged about 14 hours a week. A modest estimate of a 16mph average would yeild over 11,000 miles. This seems right based on earlier checkpoints at the quarter marks of the year.

Good memories? The AIDS Ride was great, but the best stuff was riding in the mountains on the east coast. In particular, climbing Mt Mitchell was a high point (no pun intended) for me.

47 spin classes, and 7 rides on my trainer. Last winter was terrible here in MA. I started the spin classes again due to the cold, however I will start the New Year right by gettig out tomorrow for a ride.
How many miles do you think a spin class is worth?

9012 km. That's on and off-road and my city bike.

My best ride was a century with two buddies in August. It all went perfectly and I felt great.

About 4000.
My favorite ride was the Ironman Century in Minneapolis, but only because it was my first ever Century.

My grand total was 7,021 miles, including spin classes figured at 16 mph. If you're a stickler, I did 6,151 road miles and 870 spin cycle miles. My goal at the start of the year was 3,600 miles -- so I nearly doubled that.

Best ride was the Rural Fest metric century in Hillsborough, NC. Great food, great route, and my best avg speed of the year. Toughest ride was 84 miles on the "off day" during GOBA -- got soaked by a thunderstorm during the 15 miles and rode the rest of the long, hilly route with wet feet in hot, humid weather.

there were so many rides the could rank #1.

The 250: a 262 mile road ride, aprrox 18,000ft climbing

Winning the Cascade Cream Puff 100 Single Speed Class and taking 5th overall.

All the epic MTB rides.

One stands out everytime I think of this question. It wasn't anything truly long or hard but it was inspiring. A friend (Davey) and I had just ridden up about 8 mile of gravel into the twilight. Hiked through several miles of snow to do a short 5 mile downhill. We stopped at this one point to watch the sun set over the moutains in front of us. It made me feel so small yet so big at the same time. The snow covered peaks, the sun rays coming through the remaining clouds and the stillness of the moment. It reminding me of the reason I was there. Time to go down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's to many more rides in 2002.

I rode past the 8100 mile mark during this morning's ride. I'd like to do something approaching a century/month in 2002.

I've never counted my miles. I don't have the self discipline to keep a diary.

I'd like to make a pitch for DALMAC - Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw. It's a four-day Quad Century ride in Michigan around Labor Day that I've done six or seven times. Every year I enjoy that ride more and more. There is nothing so satisfying as riding quick centuries and then sitting in the bar and swapping lies with friends.

Also, for any Columbia, SC folks who lurk here, my second favorite ride is the Tuesday night sprint ride. For someone who doesn't have the guts to actually race, there is nothing so awe inspiring as working in such fast Cat 2 and 3 company. Thanks for the rides guys.

Just short of 5,000zelig
Jan 1, 2002 3:53 AM
The goal was 5,000 and I just fell short with 4,913. I would have easily made it except having to spend two consecutive weeks in Milano on business. This year I traveled 59 days but still managed to pass 2000's total.

I already know that 2002's going to be down mileage wise as I've taken a different job entailing a longish, non-bike commuter distance, trip. The good news is that it's under a two year contract and that after 5 years in the UK, I'll head back to the States, leaving myself only 3 years short of the real life goal of retiring at 55.

5820 miles for me this year. A bit more than I was shooting for.

Favorite ride. . . hmmm. . . Nov 17, I rode the Cherohola Skyway. It is a very scenic ride, not much car traffic, running between Tellico Plains, TN and Robbinsville, NC. It was cold and windy, but sunny, had to ride it by myself because nobody else wanted to ride up such a hill. I plan on spending a good deal of time training there this spring.

Happy New Year!!!

I don't know my miles this year but I want to second the comments about the Skyway. I did the Cherohala Challenge 115 mile ride this summer, my first ride in those parts and it blew me away. If you live in the east drive down there and try it.

Do a net search on Cherohala Skyway and you'll find several pages with info and great pictures.

That particular day there were some church groups or something who were driving people and their walmart bikes up to the top to coast down the dozens of miles like it was a ski slope or something. I had to laugh as I climbed up and up...

I drove to Vermont to do the worst hill climb I know. Okemo Mt. in Ludlow, Vermont. 2,300 feet of climbing in 4.5 miles.

I'm sure there's a worse climb but I don't know where they are. The wife thought I was crazy. I left in the morning, drove 5 hours by car, rode for one hour, drove 5 hours home.

I only regret not having someone there to take pictures of me. I did take pictures but I'm not in any of them. The picture of my bike leaning up against the chair lift is nice.

Congrats to all who reached there goals.

I wonder how far the board has gone collectively. A few trips around the globe? A trip to the moon?

I fell shy of 2,000 miles due to stupidity and ego which lead to over-training. Best ride of the year? Hmmm. I only allowed myself one "soul ride" this year. I went off exploring new places on my own, and that was my favorite ride (except for the uncrossable intersection from hell).

Best average: 18.1MPH / 28 miles
Fastest: 46MPH
