|I'm planning to go Downunder for a month or two in the beginning of 2003.
Which part/region is the most cycling-cultivated?

|cycling is great in Australia. I lived in Melbourne for 2 years, and there is a lot of cycling to do around there. It really depends on where you want to be. If it were me going, I think I'd go to northern Victoria state and ride around in the mountains. If you want to be close to the water, the northern coast of New South Wales state (Byron Bay) is unbelievably beautiful, and usually pretty warm.
Don't forget to go in winter if you want to be in their summer. I think the best month to visit Australia is March, kind of like September on the east coast of the US.
Another place to consider that is off the main Sydney/Melbourne route is Adelaide and South Australia. Incredible vineyard country in the southern part of the state near the coast/Victorian boarder. In the northern part of the state, you have beautiful red rock deserts and very very remote regions (careful planning needed for long tours).
Basically, you can't go wrong anywhere....
