What is the best cycling "theme song"?Elefantino
Dec 19, 2001 8:58 AM
This conversation just came up here at office central, so I'll pass it along as a question:

What is the best theme music for cycling?

a) Theme from The Magnificent Seven by Elmer Bernstein
b) Eye of the Tiger by Survivor
c) The song of your choice
Theme from "George of the Jungle" . . .js5280

cat's out of the bag! Well, most people know, but if you're new, you wouldn't know.

Yes, I do race (have raced for over 10yrs) though I must confess I haven't since August.

This is a song about something there
There is something about this song
We did the clubs what ass
I was to have her in the sack
I was looking handsome
She was looking like an erotic vulture
I was all dressed in black
She was all dressed up in black
Everything was fine down here
What you call it here
Call it what you will here
Way down down down in this Subbacultcha

Her warm white belly in the life I'd lived had seen nothing finer
she shakes and she moves me or something
She's like jellyroll like sculpture
I was wearing eyeliner
She was wearing eyeliner
It was good down here
Saving for my scrapbook here
Way down down down in this Subbacultcha

Now we live on the sea and relax and ride the tack
Drug running on this panamanian schooner
She walks the deck in a black dress
And me I dress up in black
And we listen to the sea
And look at the sky in a poetic kind of way
What you call it
When you look at the sky in a poetic kind of way
You know when you grope for luna

"Her flesh, it shake just like jello" is a line from the Howling Wolf song "Shake for Me". Wolf was 300 pounds of heavenly joy, and he liked a big woman.

I don't know what movie you're thinking of.

This piece is my constant mental companion when I ride. It seems to capture the essence of the ride, in all its parts, whether it's a short commute or an all-day epic. The album itself is stone brilliant, and the RealAudio snippets available on Amazon don't begin to capture its magic.

The album is "Short Trip Home" by Edgar Meyer and Joshua Bell. The particular piece I hear every time I ride is called "BT."

Highly, highly recommended (along with Meyer's albums with Bela Fleck, and his two more famous titles -- "Appalachian Journey" and "Appalachia Waltz" -- with Mark O'Connor and Yo-Yo Ma.)

Here's a few, think I even put them on the same mix tape back when I was dumb enough to ride with a Walkman on:

"Shooting Star," Cris Williamson
"Sleep That Burns" Be Bop Deluxe
Scherzo from Octet for Strings by Felx Mendelsohn
"Scuttle Buttin'", Stevie Ray Vaughan
"Highway Patrol," Red Simpson
Mozart, "Hunt Quartet," the recording by the Guarneris
and last but not least,
"Parchment Farm," from the first Blue Cheer album

Dec 20, 2001 2:46 PM
I do listen to XPN, and they don't play nearly enough of this stuff. It kinda sucks that they only way they'll play classical music is if it's performed on a banjo, y'know? ;>

Then again, I shouldn't gripe; compared to most cities, we're lucky to have XPN. Then yet again, most cities at least have a full-time classical station.

XPN's good with me. While I do like classical (thought about going into music as a career along time ago-played trumpet), I also like many other types of music, so XPN fits the bill.

Agreed...if you want a theme song, then the song has to be about the theme does it not? Or at least contain some detrivative of the word "bicycle" in the lyrics. You can get much more about bikes than this song. Though I'm not sure any member of the band ever rode on a bike. Perhaps one a dare after sampling some pretty colored pills.

Ok, here's my faves. "Back In The Saddle" - Aerosmith, "Tooth and Nail" - Dokken (what it takes for me to climb, lol), "Ride of the Valkyries" - Wagner (I know somebody said it already but it's a fave of mine, I love Wagner), "Freewheel Burning" - Judas Priest, and that's all I can come up with at the moment.

Queen song Bicycle Race, is not the best bicycle theme song? "I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike! I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride it where I like".
Are you people high???? How on earth could someone pick Kraftwerk and John Fu(king Tesh???????? Say the lyrics above and tell me that it isn't the epitome of what you feel when you're at your shitty jobs????
By the way, it is not Fat Bottomed Girls. The name of the song is Bicycle Race. Don't be stupid.

Dec 19, 2001 5:44 PM
If it is to be a "cycling" theme song, it has to have cycling or something related to in the lyrics or title. We all can pick the one song that gets us pumped, but the one most associated with cycling and hits at the soul of a cyclist is Bicycle Race by Queen. How could you retards disagree with that??? It embodies all that a cyclist desires. Man are people stupid!

How can you take this crap seriously - the same thread shows up about every two months. Just wait ans it'll come around again with the EXACT same responses.

Queen's song is so obvious and suggesting it is totally unimaginative. Every time I hear it I want to go prancing around the house in lycra - wait, I already do that.

Phosphoresence Rat. Bicycle is somewhere on the album cover. Used to see Jack driving down to San Jose with the track bike on the roof. I'm warming up with "John's Other."

Roger Daltry Band in the movie "Quicksilver." Always a good Walter Mitty vision while 'cruising' Divisadero (SF)

The CBS 1985-1987 John Tesh music background is not too shabby.

Steppenwolf. Mentioned earlier was Born to Be Wild, might as well add Magic Carpet Ride, always good with a tailwind. You might want a sticker that says, My other bike is a Harley.
best riding retro stuff.

Music. Math. Cycling. They are all interelated, lots of music out there at 120-144 beats per minute, correlates with pedaling cadence. Disco anyone for the trainer?

And to top it off, on today's commute I had a tailwind going into work and coming back home.

did get nailed by the rainstorm 10 minutes from home. So much for the box of See's chocolates at work.

By Iron Butterfly....it just keeps going, and going and going.......... A good climbing cadence for me.

As far as "Bicycle race" by Freddie and the boys, after hearing some clown play it all weekend at the Hilly Hundred, I don't care if I hear it ever again. Especially since Queen had so much more to offer.

Naw, the music plays in my head, but sometimes it's hard to hear over all the voices.

If the sleeve is in good condition it might be worth putting on ebay, just to see.
