|I just got a 1980's Somec with campy components. As a steel bike, I am concerned about corrosion on the inside of the frame. What is the best way to clean the inside of the frame? I have also been told that WD-40 works as well as "Framesaver" and costs way less. Any comments on preserving and cleaning this sweetheart?|

|Depends a lot on where you live, but here in the desert (and also when I lived in central Calif.), rust seemed to be exaggerated as a frame-killer. You (or a mechanic) can get an idea of whether you have a problem by looking inside the BB shell, where water can collect. Also maybe down in the fork blades, though the fork can be replaced easily if it's rusted there.
As for frame savers, WD40 is cheap, but I don't think it's the best choice. I've been using some stuff called Frame Saver, made by Peter Wiegle (sp??). I got mine from Rivendell, about $13 a can (does 2-3 frames), but most shops have it, too. There's also Boeshield, which Rivendell uses. Easy to use once you have the frame stripped, and I don't have a speck of visible rust in an old beater I use in the rain, mud and snow.

|Go to a Nissan car dealer and ask for a can of "Nissan Rust Preventive" part# 999MP-AE001P. Works great and cheaper than Framesaver - suggested retail $6.65. This stuff was designed to be used on raw steel such as when holes are drilled through painted parts. Spray it inside the tubes, swish it around to make sure everything is covered and then tilt the tube down to allow excess to drain out. After it stops dripping, go to the next tube. It does smell a bit so do this outside. Good luck.|

|I've read a couple of places that say linseed oil can be used to preserve a steel frame. Never tried it, but I would imagine you could treat an old steel beater for just a few cents.

|If nothing else it should make things nice and gummy. many folks use LO to gum up spoke threads so the nipples won't loosen. I could imagine using it inside a frame where it could eventually get to the BB threads. |
WD-40 won't do much to help with frame prevention - it's mostly kerosene and other stuff used as a pentrating oil to free up onld rust stuff. It will thin out grease when it mixes - leaving bearings minus some lube.
Either the Frame Saver or stuff from the auto world would be a better choice - if the other methods worked well these products wouldn't exist.

|I'm not sure how much money is too much to pay to protect the frame but <$10 does not seem excessive to me. How much money did you want to save? If you use Frame Saver keep in mind that it can make a huge mess. Strip the frame down, slather it around as directed and wipe off everything that drips on the outside of the frame because once it dries it is way harder to remove.|| |
