I am in the market for Ksyruims and with the new cheaper version, I'm not sure which way to go. Should i just go with a 2000 model?

From what I can tell, Mavic "improved" the Ksyrium by shaving the rim in between the spoke eyelets. I have no idea whether this results in any real weight savings or is just a gimmick. Probably the latter. Mavic is always in search of new angles to sell stuff. I notice that they went up in price as well.

The new lower end Ksyrium appear to be a heavier version of the original with steel rather than aluminium spokes. No idea if the hub is the same.

I've ridden a pair of the "original" for almost 2 years. I've been quite happy with them and they have held up very well. Never had to monkey with them. They can be had for $600 almost anywhere (recently got a pair at Labicicletta.com for my wife), or even less from overseas suppliers.

If you want the newest thing, get the "improved" version. Personally, I think the original model is a good wheel.

I thought I wanted some K's. The new cheaper version (Elite) is not any lighter than my cheap Rolfs, so I don't see the point. The more expensive version (SL) has milling on the rims between the spokes to lighten them. I have not actually seem them, but I assume this results in an uneven rim which seems pretty aerodynamically stupid. (Does anyone know whether the rim is uneven?) The obvious choice is to buy the 2000 model, but then I worry I am not buying the best stuff. Racked with indecision, I have decided my Rolfs aren't so bad.

I've been real happy with my "older version" Ksyriums.

I recently got a set of Dave's Speeddream aerolights. If these things turn out ot be as bulletproof as the K's, I'd pronounce them to be beter. They weigh less (1435/set) andf cost less ($500 shipped).
