George Hincapie: classics rider/winnerDjudd

I just read on the "Daily Peloton" that the Posties will have a new push to win world cup races next season. This includes LA riding Milan-San Remo in support of Hincapie. I think this is a very good idea. More international exposure, LA cast as the intimidating super-domestique, and Hincapie doing what I think he would excel at -- going after Classics. Let's cross our spokes

They had better give George some more support!!! =) I grew up with him and I am sooo stoked to see him doing as well as he is.
Good Luck to Him!!!
I know he will make us proud =)

Imagine what he might do if he actually got some support-ANY support! Didn't he finish around 6th in Paris-Robaix even though he flatted? Happened 2x, didn't it? (past 2 yrs?) Wouldn't even need LA; just some support, by someone and he could pull it off.

Don't know what the rest of you think but I don't think the domestiques and other hopefuls that
USPS has signed are up to Classics race support at the level of Domo, Rabobank, et al.
Personally, I think USPS' recruitment efforts in support of George have been pretty pathetic. He'll
need Lance's help.
Armstrong's support will be limited...Djudd

by his obvious emphasis on preparing for the tour. I read he is only considering riding Milan-San Remo and definitely not L-B-L or the other Belgian one-days. Hincapie's mark could be made in those "hard man" races. USPS will have to get him support for those races if they are serious about competing and winning in them.
Hincapie doesn't stand a chance against Zabel in Milan-San RemoBruno S

Lets face it, Zabel likes to win this race and has done it many times. He is in very good shape and will be there with domestiques that have trained especially for this race. If USPS wants Hincapie to win classics they need to get some riders that have the only task of helping him. LA training seems to be very focused, he would not do the vuelta and DNF the SF Grand Prix. He peaks very high but for a short time.
True. But...mr_spin

USPS did pick up a new Belgian rider who is one of the top younger riders. He should be invaluable for Hincapie.

Hincapie will probably never beat Zabel head to head. But as great as Zabel is, Hincapie can climb better. If he can break away on the Poggio, maybe he has a slim chance. He was 9th last year, and in 2000, flatted just as he hit the Poggio.

Hincapie is more of a Flanders guy anyway. Having Lance for the Tour of Flanders will be good. If nothing else, Lance can be the workhorse for the early stages, then drop off and let the rest of the team take over. That's been their problem in the classics--the team has dropped off too quickly. I doubt they want Lance to run over too many wet, cobbled climbs. Breaking a collarbone won't be good for his Tour prep.

I'm glad to see that most people think they dont give him enough support...I thought it was just me!
From what I have heard they USPS is going to make a better effort to get him some support...It would be good to see him get some well deserved support and win some classics.

It's way too late for Postal to get any quality riders. The good guys were all snapped up in Sept.
and Oct. Lance is a good friend and loyal ally and will bust ass in MSR for George. For that
reason I wouldn't cede the race to Zabel automatically. But after that it's anybody's guess
unless some of these guys just signed are geniuses in hiding. But I doubt it.

Do you guys really think that George can outsprint the Super Mario's, Zabel's, DiLuca's and such? That's what it takes to win MSR, Zabel has thousands of kilometers in his legs and is able to hang on the Poggio..and outsprint those left at the finish

As for help, well what do you expect when the main focus is the tour? George is well aware of that...as for no help in the WC's..Lance has done pretty well at his yearly appearance at Amstel and when he was riding for Motorola and winning Flanders he didn't have much help there..look at the teams that do well in the classics, Domo, Mapei, Rabobank, Lotto,etc..how many of them do well in the overall at the Tour?

I like George, but he doesn't have the finishing power to win in a bunch..and I think he needs to adapt a style of racing more akin to Dekker

As for him flatting in PR, EVERYONE flats in PR, multiple times typically or crashes, or something..:)

I know everyone flats there; problem was, he was leading (or near the lead) when this happened, I believe.
