... course if you hear a chainsaw, it's probably leatherface...

The largest predator or overt threat to a rider round here aside from another human being would be coyote... Deer can get randy and occasionally trot alongside... but mostly, it's smaller stuff... at any rate... when riding after dark, I'm glad I've got a bit of speed... I never stop to investigate...

I often see evidence of their past camping in the bushes along my local 'multi-use path', so that's probably what you are hearing.

... they crash thru the woods like 400-lb bowling balls.

There's one little stretch of woods I pass once or twice daily. Something in there always rustles, but I've yet to see it. I passed there today during daylight, and could not see what was making the noise. Squirrels is my guess.

Or maybe an escaped convict with a chainsaw. I've seen both.
