I have a raleigh R500 road bike ,and I can pedal up to 16.1mph. I have also started to ride with group club ride. My 1st question is which gear in the back is good for climbing up a hill in a group? is the 3rd from the smallest gear in back the better gear for climbing up a Hill? And how should my learning curve with the group club ride be? And how should I ride during the winter months ahead?

you are using, try shifting to maintain a steady cadence (say 70-80, perhaps higher as your fitness and skills improve) that will keep you with the group. In other words, shift as necessary to maintain cadence, perhaps getting out of the saddle for short periods to keep or accelerate pace and to give your muscles a change.
There is no single gear, or even range of gears, that will work for you on every hill. Hill length and gradient will determine the gears you will need to use.
I like to stay in the big ring (front) until I run out of rear cogs (but avoiding cross-chaining -- using the largest and maybe second-largest rear cogs while in the big ring) and then get out of the saddle. When I sit down again, if still climbing, I shift into the small ring (front). That gives me one or two lower gears even then. If you have three chainrings up front, you'll have even more choices and lower gears.
Have fun with your riding, ask your riding buddies for advice (and watch what they do), and experiment a bit. Just remember to ride safely.

Wouldn't it depend on the group whether you got dropped? Not all group rides are hammer fests. Perhaps a little encouragement instead of the "nattering nabob of negativism" routine?

Thanks for the Compliment. But I am just starting out in Road riding. Maybe you can help me to set realistic future goals ,since you are probably at racing speeds. Or should I say at Lance riding speed. And as I have said in earlier post I am learning the thing about Road riding.

the physical movements of the better riders -- see how fast and smoothly their legs move when they spin. Watch when they get out of the saddle and when they get into the drops. Watch how they place their weight on a turn. Listen for when others are changing gears. Just by observing them, you can model your movements and improve. Of course, there are varying styles, and everyone knows a hammerhead whose technique is terrible but who still can waste the field; this is called raw talent, and there is nothing to learn from it other than that some people have it. Just realizing that there is technique to road riding is a huge step.
For the winter, build aerobic base. Don't kill yourself, just build up to being able to crank out twenty miles without it's being a big chore. Then thirty. Then fifty (now we're into April or May). Hard to give better advice because (a) I'm no expert and (b) I don't really know what you've got going on now. Just build. It'll come, slowly but surely. You don't ever need to kill yourself on every ride; it's affirmatively counterproductive. You do, however, need to push your body now and then to improve. The best way to ride faster is to ride faster (same is true for longer -- to ride longer, ride longer).
