goal setting for a newbie?flyinbowlofmilk

I just got finish doing my 1st cycling tour this year. I have also did 2 Club Rally this year. And I have started to ride with a LBS group ride. What types of goals should a newbie like me set for myself? Sould I try to do 2 cycling tour next year? I am 5'11,185, and a Afro-american male. I am also going to convert to clipless pedals.

Sounds like you have both the motivation and discipline to do whatever you set your heart on.

I think that doing one's first century is an excellent attainable goal... you may want to think about that as a goal.

You are about where I was this time last year. My goal for 2001 was doing a century. I did my first century on September 8 and have done two since then. The clipless pedals will help you a lot -- of all the improvements and upgrades I have done in bikes, gear, etc., my conversion to clipless pedals gave me the greatest incremental improvement. Also, do not put the bike away for the winter. I bought a new bike last November and could not stand to put it away. Thus, I tried to ride outside at least once per week all winter (there were a few weeks in January when the bike did not leave the house). I also rode on a trainer at least once per week. I think that my winter "training" (the term is a little grandiose for the little effort I put in) made a difference in my ability to ride longer and harder this past spring and summer.

Good point by hms. If you want to keep on improving it's important to keep riding through the winter
at least three or four times per week. Come Spring you'll be starting out from a much higher
level of base cycling fitness. Good luck regardless of where you set your goals.

How long was the tour, how many days? How long was your longest ride? Do you want to race? Without knowing any of that I agree with the other posters about doing a century, or if you have already done one a 200K.

Another goal would to ride to and from your club rides rather than drive, it is hard a first but you will get a lot stronger fairly quickly.

The Tour(cycle N.C.) was 435 miles over 7 days My longest ride to date was a Part of the Tour (Cycle N.C.) 82.3 miles ,which I did in 5hrs 30 min. I have also ridden to most of the club rides ,since I don't have a car. If it's a possibility. My avg speed is 15.5 mph during the tour(Cycle N.C.) and now at the club rides I have increased it to 16.3 mph. That is due to riding with a group that rides in between 17 and 20 + mph. I plan on riding with the some more this Winter. Is racing a realistic future goal or a pipe dream ?

Racing is always a realistic goal, if it's something that appeals to you. The important thing
is to set your goals progressively and incrementally, i.e. a series of small ones that stretch you
a bit, but are achievable. A good example is what has already been mentioned, going from your
long 82 mi. stage to a century. Stay with the club rides, learn to pull through, go with accelerations,
breaks, etc. A good place to start with racing is to go out and try some time trials. These will
make you stronger and give you an idea where you stand relative to the group. When you feel strong
enough try out a training race or a small, local Cat 5 race. On an annual basis perhaps think of
ramping up volume and speed goals by 10% or so. Be consistent and you'll keep on improving.
