|Leg cramps while sleeping - Help!||dave woof|

I've been riding all my life (38 now), nowadays 1-2 hrs weekdays, 2-4 hrs on weekends. Last few months I've been having 'cramps' in my legs at night after I'm asleep, around 2 or 3 in the morning. Not like charlie horses, but more like after you've been sitting on a plane for 4 hours and are just standing up and trying to walk. I'm pretty healthy, 170lbs at 5'10, blood pressure is fine. This is keeping me awake at night cause it really hurts.
When it hits I take ibuprofen and aspirin, lately I've been taking aspirin even before I go to bed. Really doesn't help at all. My legs kind of 'twitch' all night like they want to ride more or exercise more... or like they're really tight and I need to stretch.. I do stretch on and off the bike, at night I stretch when the pains hit, it helps a little.
Anyone ever have this problem, what did you do about it or what was the cause? I'm thinking electrolyte imbalance or potassium deficiency, I do take multivitamins though. My rides vary according to how I feel, some days easy some hard. Pains don't vary with riding variations though.

|I have had the same problems this year and after hoping that it wasn't age related (38YO also) I discovered it was from dehydration, both during riding and afterwards. What helped the most was drinking enough water before bed that I would have to make a rest room run after about 4-5 hours of sleep, and when up, I would drink even more water, enough so my back teeth were floating in the morning. It may or may not work for you!

|I know that depending on what shoes I wear my legs will take more or less time to recover due to circulation. I assume you aren't wearing work boots to bed, but maybe there is a chance that wearing socks could effect circulation enough to cause pain.
Just a thought.

I'll try drinking more water, I live in the desert so that's a good idea out here anyway.

|I'm 15 years old and in pretty good shape also. I get those same things you talk of. Sometimes it will be like a tight muscle, then ill role over in my sleep and the muscle will lik pull hard enough for me to feel it and wake up. OR then sometimes i will be sleeping than i will jsut get a tremendous cramp in my quads that will stay there for a few seconds than leave. I thought it was just from my muscles growing or whatever..|

|Obviously, drinking lots of water while riding; then after about 90 minutes of riding, I take Rolaids "extra strength" tablets (675mg Calcium & 135mg Magnesium)... also, I take a teaspoon of baking soda (with 4oz water) as soon as I stop riding. You might also be developing lactose intolerance...are you drinking milk or eating dairy products before going to sleep? (Calcium can be obtained from Dolomite powder) My cramps were so bad, I could wake up the subdivision....|| |
