I am going to try out my first mtn time trial. What wheel size will be the best to use? Also, are there any other modifications I should make to my standard road frame?

Frames are designed for either 650C or 700C so you'll have to use whichever wheelset fits your bike...

Aside from that, there are a lot of personal variables to consider when making a wheelchoice...

Mods would depend on what you've already got and what works well for you. http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/techctr.html http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/bikefit.html You'd need time to evaluate any positional changes and adapt (changes should be made in small increments... one thing at a time over a period of weeks if necessary).

General rule of thumb... go aero for flatter courses... go light (probably non aero on wheelchoice and position on the bike) when the terrain goes up.

We abide.

I have both a 650c (a QR Kilo) for multisport and a 700C (trek 2200). If you can afford it get both the 650 takes turns and jumps quicker but don't show up to a group ride with it! Even in the mountains I use a 56 tooth chain ring on the 650c otherwise I top out on the way down.
