I know this has been broached before, but I just made my initial visit to Trek's "Project One" site ... and it's pretty neat.

Yes, you can finally get OCLV with Campy Record. (Which may cause bleating from Trek purists, but whatever.)

Yes, you can customize the paint (from more than a dozen choices) with your name on it.

Yes, you can donate money to the LAF and get a neat LAF sticker. (I had one on mine before it got munched and repainted.)

I heard about this from my LBS some time ago. I checked out the website and agree - it's pretty slick, if pricey. I can testify to the quality of Trek's painting. I have a 4 year old Lemond Carbon Maillot Jaune. The BB shell separated from the frame this summer and Trek handled the repair and repaint with no questions asked. They were even able to match (near as I can tell) the original paint, which was yellow top tube fading to Purple at the BB. Excellent quality and it looks brand new.
Wow, another Trek endorsement. Crack'm and glue'm. nmDog Breath

nicely done interactive site. Nice component options, except wheelset is very limited. ALMOST makes me wish I hadn't just bought my new C40 a few weeks ago.
Aw, c'mon. Even ME, the Trek lover, would take the C-40! (nm)Elefantino

I just went to Treks website and "built" my "custom" 5900. The bike with my choice of their offered paint schemes and Record components came out close to $6500. I had Serotta build me a made to measure ti frame, sketched my own paint and hung Record on it for $1500 less. If I'm going to lay out that jack I'd rather have custom really mean custom,I want to pick my angles and lengths not just the color.

That's with MSRP. No reputable bike shop charges MSRP! I just piked up my 2002 5900 for 3300 bucks.

Same old sh!te - different day.

In fact you've always been able to send your OCLV a paint shop to get custom paint. JB and others will do it for less than Trek will and you'll get a better job. At the end of the day Trek still only warranties finish for one year - even if they screw it up royally ('96 nude OLCV with the flat clear finish). I can't believe that people would pay Trek extra for this - talk about sheep. What do the do give you a deal on a set of Rolf wheels?
