|It just about drove me nuts today until I read one of the 10 daily *newbie needs advice* posts. I was shocked when the kid talked of 30% grades up and down, then I was in tears at the first response. It got worse from there when he said he's doing 50mph downhill, only to expose this is on a cyclocross bike on gravel or dirt roads. Thanks for the laughs!
All that combined with the 5 foot 7 inch, 29/30 inch inseam guys even remotely considering 57cm bikes, the usual guys who think their particular bike is best and we're all idiots for not riding the exact same thing, the usual bashers who slam other brands but have likely never ridden them, the newbie who posts he's never ridden before but he's looking at either a Palmares or Seven or something and needs help deciding between the two $5000 rigs, the Ti v. steel v. alu deal, the vicious DA v. Campy grudge match and to boot, we get some anti-american fool piping in.
Wow, what a place.

|My favorite is the fashion police on the bike pictures part of this site. Stems too high/low, ugly colors, frame too large/small. It takes large cojones to post a picture of your bike.|

|Don't forget about the ugly bar tape, lose the saddle or mirror, seat too high/low ... You would think the only reason for owning a bike is to have it look a certain way, rather than fit and be comfortable for the rider.|

|How far should I shave? Should I stop at cojones? Should I shave nether region area? Should I just shave full body including unibrow, eyelashes and nose hairs?|

|July when someone started a poll about resting heart rates. The poll drew numerous responses, and dedicated and earnest posters duly noted their (alleged) resting heart rates until one wag finally had to say it. |
He said, you know, the average resting heart rate of the combined riders in this year's Tour is 53. And, here is an unscientific sampling of rank amatuers, and the average is 48.
I don't know whether he was right about either number, but I was ROFLMAO. Maybe SOMEBODY on this board has a resting heart rate below 50, but, like, EVERYONE who posted supposedly did, and, I'm sorry, but that is hilarious.

|Resting HR's. Can we say "bradycardia"?||Tig|
Oct 23, 2001 4:49 PM
|Indurain's resting HR was something like 48. His was among the lowest in the peloton! My best resting HR average was 56 during my best condition. For non athelets, anything below 60 is considered bradycardia.|
|Actually Mig's reported resting heart rate was in the low 30s||Tom C|
Oct 23, 2001 8:07 PM
|and resting heart rate doesn't necessarily mean you can win anything, let alone the TDF.|
|several things to consider||Dog|
Oct 24, 2001 8:08 AM
|I wouldn't automatically assume people are full of it if they report low heart rates.
Typically, younger people, and smaller people, have higher heart rates. Tour riders are typically younger and smaller than many of us.
I visited the doctor's office a few weeks ago and the doc told me my heartrate was 51. This was after I just hopped up on the table.
I've had a morning heart rate of 38. That's not the same as "resting", though. Typically, I think "resting" is in the mid day, not after just waking.
Some people have larger hearts. Larger hearts can pump more blood per beat, therefore resulting in lower heart rates.
So, bottom line, resting heart rate is not associated only with fitness, and people may not be incorrect in reporting lower rates than pro cyclists.
