|I was reading another post about triple chainrings that peaked my paranoia. Whenever I start out from a complete stop, I hear this "ca-chuck" from around my rear der.---I didn't know what it was. Could it be that my chain is too big? Right now I have a triple, but I can only use it as a double because the Shimano 600 shifters are only compatible with doubles. My big concern is, I ride a lot; are these noises I'm hearing killing my bike?|

|Can you feel this through your pedals? Is it only from a dead stop? Does it happen in any gear, or just on one chainring, or just on one cog, or just on one group of cogs? Does it happen when you start hard, when you start easy, etc? Is the chain actually skipping, or is it only a noise? If you think the chain is too long, what makes you think so? Does it hang loose in the middle ring/small cog combo? Is there any visible damage to any cogs?
Think this through to isolate the source of the noise/clunk. The most "damage" you could have done would be to damage cogs by the chain skipping. Even then, it is not likely this could have been caused simply by a chain that is too long, absent shifting problems causing that skipping or jamming somewhere.

|I agree totally with the poster who said try to isolate the source.
However, if your stuff is fairly old and/or worn, your cassette body may have a broken pawl in it that slips on occasion under load. Your description of it doing this when leaving from a stop light seems to fit - if it was gears grinding, you'd have it happen more frequently while shifting and/or climbing. If the chain was too long, you'd hear it slapping on the chainstay on bumpy roads when riding in the small ring - mid cassette combinations.
I experienced this particular issue pretty regularly with the old beatup midrange to low-end Shimano stuff I used to ride. At one point both my MTB and my cyclocross bike did it. It isn't necessarily dangerous or damaging to the bike unless it does it abruptly as you jump out of the saddle to jam on a hill or sprint (can cause you to lose control).
Once mine got frequent enough to really annoy me, I changed out the cassette body. Have a shop do this; it involves lots o' cussing and ball bearings escaping under the furniture if you've never done it before.
