When did this bike switch from Al to Steel ? My commuter is a second hand Aluminium Alpe de Huez & I would like to put a date on the frame (I bought it second hand).

If you want to date the frame, get the serial # off the bottom of the bottom bracket and call or e-mail lemond.

Pretty obvious...

I'll give it a go.

Thanks

I bought a new aluminum Alpe d'Huez in '99. It came in orange and blue. The year after that, the Alpe d'Huez was still aluminum, but came in white.

I believe it was last year, when the company switched it to 853 steel. At the same time, the Buenos Aires was switched from an all-853 bike to a bike with lesser Reynolds steel chain- and seatstays.

All 2000 Steel lemonds were an 853 front triangle with 525 seat & chainstays. In 2001 Lemond changed the Zurich (and the Alpe de Huez) to an all 853 makeup, and left the Buenes Aires & below the way they had been (which was an 853 & 525 mix. I know because I have a 2000 B/A and I have both years catalogs.
Len's right. I stand corrected. (nm)Elefantino

I'm fairly certain that this switch is brand new (ie., the '02 models). I'm sure if I'm wrong, I'll be corrected in no uncertain terms, but I helped my skinny sister shop Lemonds last spring and remember steering her away from the AdH because it was Al.
