Today it was "Tipperary" that was messing with me. Something about "It's a long way to Tipperary" somehow fit the pace, but I couldn't get it out of my head. Does this happen to you? Sometimes the tune is something great that works to enhance the ride. After a few operas, maybe Doug will have some new tunes stuck in his head? ;o)
Sopranos theme ("Woke up this mornin'") by A3...Elefantino

Off the same album (although not PC) is "Killing an Arab" - old Cure has a good beat to ride to.
"Killing an Arab" Was an anti-racist song!!!nestorl
Oct 19, 2001 8:54 AM
Decure got very offended that the song was used during several skinhead rallies. They made a public statement (which is now on all new cds) indicating that the song was supposed to raise awareness to the struggle of the Palestinean people in the occupied territories.

"Killing an Arab" was a tribute to the book "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. It certainly was not a racist song, and I hope nobody gloms onto it as a "rally the troops" song in the ongoing war.
agreed. one of my fav bands, and authors. this is scaryJs Haiku Shop

Killing an Arab

Standing on a beach
With a gun in my hand
Staring at the sea
Staring at the sand
Staring down the barrel
At the arab on the ground
See his open mouth
But hear no sound

I'm alive
I'm dead
I'm the stranger
Killing an arab

I can turn and walk away
Or I can fire the gun
Staring at the sky
Staring at the sun
Whichever I choose
It amounts to the same

Absolutely nothing

I'm alive
I'm dead
I'm the stranger
Killing an arab

Feel the steel butt jump
Smooth in my hand
Staring at the sea
Staring at the sand
Staring at myself
Reflected in the eyes of
The dead man on the beach

The dead man
On the beach

I'm alive
I'm dead
I'm the stranger
Killing an arab

Oct 18, 2001 9:15 PM
I came close to crashing the first 20 to 30 times "Girl" popped into my head on a ride. Now I'm ready for it. Although my upper body still starts swaying, I've learned to compensate for it.
Still... bad for my form :-). nmnestorl

etc. etc. etc.

"follow me" by Uncle Cracker (I think that's the name). Man I hate that song, but once it is in my head that's all I can think of. I rode the entire HH100 with that one playing over and over. Sick huh?

Gosh, I don't think I have heard most of the songs ya'll mentioned. I seem to just sing the last one I heard before I got on my bike. But it is a great way to forget the pain when on a long tough climb. Better then just counting to 4 over and over. Done that lots.
The Great Adventure - Steven Curtis Chapmankyvdh

It's a Christian song with a good message and also great imagery and beat that fits perfectly with cycling. Below is a link to a song clip if you want to hear part of it.

I'll actually sing the old Baptist standard "I'll Fly Away" while on fast downhills.

....the guitar work in Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Cold Shot" has a very rythmic cadence that haunted me during my training for my 1st century. Good stuff though!

Gotta love those Vegetales. I've got a 2 year old who owns the tv. AND I don't mind singing as long as it's not my turn to pull at the front.

I always get that one stuck in my head. I'd like to say that I have children and that's how the VeggieTales song got stuck there, but I really have no good excuse. :)

At least that one has a good beat to keep my tempo up.

You would not believe how many times I get the songs from my kids Veggie Tales tapes in my head while I am riding. The guys think I am nuts when I start singing about King Darius!!

Doesn't usually happen. I just can't sing 'em in my head, because it is kind of like a different rhythm when you pedal, no matter what the song is.

However, one time it was a "Discovery channel song" by Bloodhound gang. Great Euro beat!!!!!!!

Detour by Rose Maddoxbreck
Oct 18, 2001 9:40 PM sung by country artist Rose Maddox of Maddox Brothers and Rose, though originally recorded by country artist Elton Britt who also had a big war-time hit back in the 40's, "There's A Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere".

DETOUR ..........[ for guitar, my favorite the old Gibson "F" slot ].
Recorded by Elton Britt
Written by Paul Westmoreland

[D] Headed down life's [D7] crooked [D] road
Lot of things I [D7] never [D] knowed
And the cause of me not [D7] knowin', I now [A] pine
Trouble [D] got in the [D7] trail
Spent the [G] next five years in [G7] jail
Should have [A] read - that [A7] DE-TOUR [D] sign.

DE-[G] TOUR, there's a [G7] muddy road a-[G] head
DE-[D] TOUR, paid no [D7] mind to what it [D] said
DE-[G] TOUR, oh, these [G7] bitter things I [G] find
Should have [A] read - that [A7] DE-TOUR [D] sign.

When I got right to the place, where it said "about face"
I thought that all my worries were behind
But the farther I go - the more sorrow I know
Should have read that DETOUR sign.

When I got stuck in the mud, all my hopes dropped with a "thud"
I guess that my heart's strings are made of twine
Had no will power to get - from the hole that I'm in yet
Should have read that DETOUR sign.

cheers :)

I spent a whole season hearing nothing but Gamelan orchestra (Indonesian) when I rode. That was two years ago. Today it was music from a freeride movie.

Other than Boys Don't Cry, everybody here seems to have low cadence songs - pick it up !!

Last week was Discotheque by U2 and All Along the Watchtower by Jimmy.

Ice Cream Man - Van Halen

During my century this past weekend I got stuck singing the Theme from Smokey and the Bandit as well as the Theme from Blazing Saddles (He rode a blazing saddle, he wore a shining star. His job, to offer battle, to bad men near and far)
Only problem was after a while I tired of singing the same verses and had to start making up my own. My version of Smokey now has 19 verses to it.

This one used to get played during warmup sessions at the velodrome. The words are fitting for a "best friend" bicycle.
"I'm taking a ride with my best friend.
I hope he never let's me down again.
He knows where he's taking me.
Taking me to where I want to be..."

Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, when I'm climbingDaveG
Oct 19, 2001 1:45 PM
For some reason, this tune always comes to me when I climbing. Maybe its the rising notes in the main riff or maybe its the slow, hypnotic meoldy, but it seems to help to play this in my head when I'm on a long climb. Songs not recommended to get in you head include "Muskrat Love" and anything by the Bay City Rollers.

Bad to the bone. I drink (ride) alone. Born to be bad. Can be others, too. Recently, while riding through some of Pa's most scenic rural roads, it was America the Beautiful.
