I started walking and Tai Chi as part of my cross training. I used to make fun of Tai Chi, but believe me it works. It not only reduces stress, it actually has improved my cycling fitness. How it does this, I do not know? Walking has really made me lose weight, I did not think it would do this. Apparently walking is just as effective as jogging in burning calories. It also has the advantage of a lot less injury. Have any of you tried either or both?

As I mentioned above, I have been doing Tai Chi for about 5 years. I think that the reason it imroves cycling fitness is the following:

1.) Because it encourages relaxation, recovery is faster. Muscle rebuild is partially a function of Oxiganated blood flow, T/C encourages this oxegenation into relaxed muscles.

2.) I ride more efficiently as a result of learning where I am holding tension & how to relax it. I ride more relaxed, which is easier on the heart.

3.) The deep belly breathing tht is a patrt of T/C has encouraged me to deeper breathing, consequently I am able to oxigenate my blood easier.

My experience.
