I was just reading the post about a crazed driver passing a car into oncoming traffic and tryign to take out a guy and his wife. Well after recently relocating from souther california to the hell on earth known as New York I run into alot of these situations. Drivers in NY are the most inconsiderate and clueless drivers I have ever seen. It seems that at least 3 times a ride someone trys to kill me...its unreal. Well here is my story and its probably not the best thing to do but I was riding on the service road of the expressway and an oversized load truck came flying off the exit ramp. He was meging over to the far right lane where I was riding one foot inside the shoulder and he never looked to see if anyone was there and nearly clipped me...the flag off the side of the truck smacked my shoulder and almost threw me off my bike. I was pretty pissed off and just my luck he got caught at the red light at which he was racing to at 50 miles an hour. I crept up to the red flag on the side of the truck and broke it off...He saw this and started to yell at me...SO i pulled up next to his window and sprayed him with my water bottle and had some choice words for him. So I asked him to kindly pull over so i could beat the tar out of him. So out he jumped and it was GO TIME...I guess i look alot smaller on my bike but what he didnt notice was that the last thing he wanted was 6`4`` 240 pounds of pisst off me up his butt. So once he was out of the truck and i got off my bike he quickly changed his attitude. Thank goodness nothing happend, just a lot of yelling....I guess I would classify this episode as a case of bike rage on my part. I just had enough of drivers not paying attention and not caring about us cyclists and I snapped. So now I just try and keep my mouth shut and when drivers do dumb things I try to laugh it hard as it is.
well thats my story of how to deal with reckless drivers =)
be safe and stay stoked!!

well, did he understand that he hit you with that flat? Shouldn't have broken it off, but got his plates and call the police. Good luck

well after I got done he knew he almost hit me. I'm lucky he didnt kill me...I think what i did was more gratifying than getting his plate and having the police kindly tell him to stop driving like a maniac =)

My experience in Utah and NY would be that the cop would tell you the guy was perfectly legal and it was your fault for being an innocent victim.

I was almost killed by a truck the other day too. It caused me to loose my temper. I was in the right hand lane, two lanes in the direction I was headed, traffic was not heavy. I felt the presence of The Truck behind me. He just stayed there for 1/4 mile or so. I believe he was staying behind me on purpose. Anyway, as the road curved to the right, he began passing me. The cab of the truck got by fine, the trailer did not. The trailer actually brushed my left shoulder. There were no cars in the left lane this entire time so I am pretty sure he intended on doing that. I hopped the curb, missed a tree and ended up on the sidewalk, still upright, glad I didn't have to pee. So I speed up trying to catch him to get the tag#. He got caught at the next traffic light, I caught up. There were no tags on the trailer or cab, no company name or anything. I very stupidly went by him on the sidewalk and got right back in the lane ahead of him. Luckily my turn was not too far ahead. Very, very dumb move on my part. I have been afraid to ride that direction during the week ever since.

those people who used to write and then just vanish, you couldve been sure many of us couldve at one time or another ...there should be an obituary section on this site...i stay away from anything large= big intersections, big roads, big trucks...take the backroads, its much nicer anyway and it keeps your blood pressure down

After many years riding a bicycle for my training (Bodybuilder), I was used to having things thrown at me, name calling etc. In 1992, I was riding on a bike lane, 6:30 am. Along came an old pickup truck, telling me that I did not belong on the road. I continued without saying a word. Next thing I knew I was struck by this auto. I was not wearing a helmet therefore suffered head injuries, broke and dislocated shoulder and assorted bruises and road rash. He left. I lay on the side of the road 38 minutes, almost bled to death. I was in the hospital longer than the person who hit me went to jail. Yes, I got the tag # and description, he was picked up the next day. Unapolegetic. He ended my career!!!!

Those are some pretty nasty stories...I can't tolerate people who think its funny to pass a cyclist within inches while doing 60 MPH when the adjacent lane is empty. I wonder if they are really that stupid that they cant realize that hitting a cyclist will most likley send them into the ICU unit of the local hospital. Would it really kill them to move over an extra couple of feet in their lane when passing?
