Phil's been bugging me for a while to swap out my rear wheel for one that he built. I'm kinda of the 'if it ain't broke...' school of thought.
He finally convinced me by having me hold the skewer on each side of the original wheel, with a campy hub, and spin it. If felt kinda grainy - like maybe it was dirty inside - which is not the case.
Then I did the same with the new wheel with the Dura Ace hub...it spins as smooth as silk! I was sold!
And it may just be the Princess and the Pea thing, but I swear I can tell the difference on the road too.
Guess I've officially crossed to the other side now...I'm getting excited about components!! Who'da thunk it?

|Don't hold the skewer and spin the wheel. Hold the AXLE (or the cones) and spin the wheel. The skewer holds the wheel tight to the frame--it is not supposed to be weight bearing. Spinning the wheel via the skewer might feel dirty when the bearings are actually clean and smooth, because the skewer itself could be dirty, or where it runs through the axle could be dirty.
Oh, Good hubs DO feel different. No question about that.

|Rinse lube adjust repeat? I get your point, and it applies in a general sense, but you can't treat hubs like chains. There is nothing to rinse, and you use grease, not lube.
Hubs are messy, annoying things to clean and adjust. But there's a nice sense of satisfication when you clean one out, put all the bearings back and get the cone adjustment just right. The wheel seems to sing again.

too bad that noone nowdays bother to rebild 'em.
greese has tendency to dry out, dirt/water gets in and
it only takes 1/2hr to rebuild/adjust hub, once in a couple years

|problem is after you adjusted hub you may unintentionally overtighten it when you try to lock it. Then you have to go back and do it again. When properly adjusted hub should have no "sand" feel, borderline with "loose"
Campy suppose to be the smoothest hub out there (though hubs with seals have slitely higher resistance) at least on par with Shimano
even cheapo Taiwanese hubs can be adjusted to run more or less smoothly, given time and good quality bearings

|It is a princess and pea thing. You haven't a hope of feeling a drag difference on the road. Th DA hub will sound different when coastiong however. Don't let that stop you getting excited about components, though.
