I went out to clean my bike yesterday, to discover the chain had slipped off the front cogs, and was resting on the bottom bracket. Can't figure out how it happened, no one in the house will fess up to messing with the bike.
Anyway, there is a black plastic "thing" on the seat tube, just above the bb, that prevented me from getting the chain back where it belonged. After much cussin, I finally figured out how to loosen the "thing" and fix the chain.

So -- what is that thing -- besides something to get in the way and irritate me.

"chain keeper" - or in more technical terms, a sort of L-shaped doo-hickey that is supposed to prevent the chain from coming off on the inside?

Third eye chain watcher... usually not needed for road bikes, commonly used in CX. Somebody played a joke on you.
