Michelin Axial Pro's or Continental Grand Prix 3000's?Allen az

I'm looking for some racing tires, but I can't decide which ones. Any experiences with either the Michelin's or the Conti's? Also, how long (miles) do racing tires usually last?

but if you have to have one of these I'd go with Axial Pros. They wear better and are just as sticky. I use these for race-only wheels.

The Grand Prix is a great tire. I've been running them since 94 and love them. For years I was the poster child for Conti brand loyalty. High milage, high performance. What more could you ask? And the strings hanging off are a trademark of sorts. Since the 3000s have come out, my LBS won't carry the Grand Prix. I tried the 3000s. I got 500 miles per tire and that was it. Not worth it for me. I'd use them to race, but not to ride. I switched over to the Axial Pros. They perform well, but I've only got about 1000 miles on my first set, so I can't give a real testimony. I'd say get Grand Prixs if you can find them, otherwise go with the Axial Pros.

These tires are pretty equivalent. My experience (180 lb rider) is that both will deliver 2000-2500 miles on the rear before the casing threads start to show through. IMO a "blind" rider could not tell the difference in either the ride or the traction - too many other variables to say there is a significant difference between the tires. The GP3000 is normally available from LaBicicletta at $29, which is hard to beat. You won't go wrong with either.

but I am a Conti man.

still GP3000 offer much better grip in wet IMHO. I was riding in rain and while my buddy's Pros were slipping on climbs my Conties were rock solid.

with respect to miles 2,000-2,500 sounds about right

I could get the milage out of them. They rode like a dream. But I got exactly 500 miles. I was so surprised the first time that I was sure it was a fluke. I bought another Conti 3000. Again, exactly 500 miles. Did I mention I'm a 255lb hammer thrower? That might be a factor, eh? Anybody know where I can get the old GPs? Never got less than 3000 miles on them.

I still ride them, and though they last a bit longer (~20%)
and roll almost as fast I won't get another pair Why?
GP3000 grab much better in rain, less prone to sidewall cuts
extra couple $$ you save ain't worth extra visit to ER

you may try VREDESTEIN, I have heard good things about them /no personal experience my buddy swears by them/ LaBicicletta has good price

with your weight parts durability should be a problem. I rode with a guy of your weight (240lbs+) and he broke Dura Ace crank arms twice, I would watch and replace critical parts (Hbars, stem, fork etc) often. Also watch that Ti frame for cracks ;)

That looks like two Ti's Two Steels and an Al. why you always bashin Ti?

bashing Ti I am bashing Ti frame builders for subpar quality

Ti frames are usually high end so builders push envelope trying to make 'em as light as possible
Ti is much harder to weld (and that's were it usually fails)
Most Ti frames come from small builders (which sometimes means uncalculated design and bad welds)

Seriously the guy is big, strong he will put much more stress..
I wouldn't be surprised if he routinely brakes chains (not that I haven't broken any)

doesn't matter what he rides Al, Ti or steel
he should inspect his bike more often then I would (being 1/2 of his weight)
stay away from too light parts, replace critical parts before they break
200g Al bars, 100g Al stem is not good idea (am I bashing Al?) and it hurts when it breaks

PS in retrospect I've seen more broken Ti frames then steel or Al my LS mtb cracked along headtube weld

Yes, I'm 255 and pretty strong, I reckon. I've got a steel Tommasini (bought in 94), 2 C-Dales (92 and 94), a Litespeed (95), a steel Giant (89), and a steel Nishiki Olympic Special (1984).
I ride 10-15 hours a week in-season and 5 hours a week out. I'm a commuter.
I really do want to buy a new bike but don't have a good reason. And, yes, I check those frames 3 or 4 times a year for cracks and flaws and have never broken a thing. In fact, I'VE NEVER BROKEN A SPOKE (on a road bike, anyway). However, I do have to replace rear rims every couple of years, and rear tires go fast.
If I could get GPs at the LBS, I would. I'm hoping the Axial do the trick.

If you are using the Conti and or Axial Pro for racing what are the recommendations for a training/riding tire???
