Something nice about Performance Bike.LAIrish

I bought a heart rate monitor a couple of weeks ago at Performance Bike. I was in there a couple of days ago and picked up their latest sale flyer. I found the same HRM on sale for $10 less and you got a free pair of arm warmers with purchase. This left me somewhat peeved. So I packed up the HRM and took it back:

Me: Hi. I'd like to return this.
Clerk: Fine.
[Clerk takes out return form and starts to fill out.]
Clerk: Was there anything wrong with it?
Me: No.
Clerk: Oh, you just didn't like it?
Me: No, I liked it fine.
Clerk (with quizzical look): Then . . . ?
Me: I bought this two week ago. Now, you guys have it on sale for $10 less and you're giving away arm warmers with every purchase. So, I'm returning this one and I'm gonna buy a new one.
Clerk: Cool. You're gonna buy the same one?
Me: Yup.
Clerk: Would you mind if you got this one?
Me: No, not at all.
Clerk: Cool. I'll just wring it up as an exchange. What size arm warmers do you want, small, medium, large, or extra large?
Me: Large
Clerk: Here's your refund. Here are your arm warmers. Thanks, come back soon.

I was no longer peeved.

I have always gotten good service from Performance, which is more than I can say for Nashbar.

or is it the other way around. Can't remember but it is true.

Yes, it's true, but they haven't merged their catalog operations (yet, anyway).

I really like my nearest Performance store which, unfortunately, is closed for a couple of months due to a fire (Paoli PA). In many ways it's the finest bike shop in the area.

I agree with you Rich. I was shocked to find out about the fire. I hadn't been there in a while. They also, at least some of the fellows did, tell you the price as they ring you up, so you can catch any "mistakes". I never had a problem with the Paoli store and they have a much better selection than Bikeline & others in the area. Their prices seem to be slightly lower than the catalog during some of their sales too. Good store.

I was shocked the first time I went in there, after all the horror stories about their stores I'd heard on message boards.

Huge, clean, well-organized, well-stocked, well-staffed. No trouble getting service. A mechanic answered a couple of technical questions for me (about the use of tools I was buying) cheerfully and at length.

I dropped a bunch of cash there during their Fall sale; yes, prices were lower than catalog, or anywhere else I've seen. Deore crankset for son's MTB for $49; Viewpoint Dual headlight for $90. Great prices, and they did warn me that the receipt would show full price, with the discount as a separat line item.

They even sent me a 10% discount to use at their Montgomeryville store while Paoli rebuilds from the fire.

I do support my local independent shop -- CycleFit in Wallingford -- and buy bikes, service, and as much gear as possible there. But Performance is like going to the mall instead of the corner store.

I received the same discount coupon. That's how I found out about the fire. If I need to find something, it's usually there. Luckily, I don't really NEED anything until the store reopens.

Happy Riding.

At their sales, they sometimes mark things on the shelf with a Sale sign and price, but they don't enter the sale price into the computer. And you don't know you're being charged full price until after you pay your bill (that's when you get the receipt). Twice I learned I'd been over charged only after getting home. The next sale I shopped at I went over the receipt while I was at the register - sure enough I'd been overcharged again.

When I'm buying something from them at one of their stores, I tell them what the sale price is before they ring it up.

Most stores- not just bike- have some kind of price guarantee. They will refund the difference if something goes on sale within a month or so. Not a big deal.

but it's nice to actually take advantage of the policy. And the guy was just so "cool" about it. It was almost as if he was congratulating me for being such a smart shopper.

I could post a 3 week e-mail exchange between myself and their co-serv. Finaly got the problem solved, I think. The E-orders had been better then Nashbar but now I feel the reverse is true.

I've often gotten sale price on stuff after it went off sale just by asking. I even took a pair of shoes back I bought there when the sole cracked in half after a year of use. They gave me a full refund. If you know what you want this is a good place to shop. Cons are that nobody there seems to know much about cycling or just doesn't care to share it if they do. I am a Team Performance member and that definately pays off for me as you get $10 certificate for every $100 you spend there.

Two more about Performance Bike:

1. Had a horrible experience with them. Wrote a letter and complained. Someone call me at my house

Perf bike: " Hello Mr. ... I want to apologize about your experience, yada yada yada... and we have given you a credit of 10% of your purchases during the past 12 months. You now have $189 credit in your account and hope to keep your business"

2. Got a helmet and did not like the color. Sent it back and said, I do not like the color I want a black one.

GOt it back with a $25 refund because the helmet was on sale when I returned it, and a 6 dollar REFUND from my shipping COSTS!!!!

boy I love those people!
