Paraffin(9 posts)

Does anyone use paraffin for a chain lube anymore. I use it, it works, it is clean. Sure, it takes a little time, but give me a break!!!!!! How much time does it take. It is good for about 300 miles.

I like Pedro's Ice Wax. It's a synthetic wax lube that doesn't attract dirt and junk like paraffin can. It works it's way into the deep bearing areas of a chain, but isn't thin and drippy like White Lightning. I'm not saying paraffin is bad. I just prefer other types of chain lube.

I tried it a few years ago when I was in a "Back to basics" stage (Brooks saddles, index shifting, wool shorts...). It was clean...but, MAN, it was a pain to apply, and I didn't get anything like 300 miles out of it. An old LBS owner in town says I probably didn't get the wax hot enough (he says the double-boiler technique is for sissies--you should put the wax pot right on the fire). Too much work for me.

The secret is to get it hot! When I bought my new Cannondale r4000si, the chain was really noisy using Pro-Lube. I started using Paraffin the noise went away! it is a heck of a lot cleaner!

Paraffin is flammable. Putting it directly on a flame is a good way to start a fire. Kudos! See ya soon!

Many things are flammable when placed on an open flame, clothes etc. The reason I use Paraffin, is because I hate grease or oil stains, dirty chains etc. Paraffin has worked for me. I realize it is a Pain-in-the-ass, but then again it is my ass!
