braze or clamp on derailleursbear

I dont think I ever seen a braze on derailleur,, is it like the bottle cage set up with a couple of bolts? with kind is better and why? I order a new frame and it will have Braze on.

A braze-on has a little tab, that coincidentally, has been brazed onto the frame. The tab has a little oval hole for the front derailleur bolt, and the derailleur just bolts right on. I can't really think of any advantage or disadvatage to either system- the braze-on is sort of a classy, but unnecessary, add on.

Back when all frames were steel and all tubes were 1" in diameter, everything could be clamped on to the frame and all parts were a standard size. When frame builders began experimenting with different materials in different shapes and sizes, then parts like derailleurs, bottle cages, cable stops, shifter bosses, etc. had to be brazed onto the frame. I would think clamp on derailleurs offer a little more adjustment than braze-ons, but that's kind of moot unless you're running chainrings that are significantly different from the norm. I have read that weight is a toss up between the two.

There is one drawback to braze-ons: big chainrings are out. We had a big customer order a Litespeed Blade (when they were all 650c), and the braze-on wouldn't allow the derrailluer to go high enough for a 56t ring. That was a long afternoon with a rat-tail file...

with a 48t or 46t big ring. It might be tough to get the derailleur cage close enough to the rings.

I wonder if I could just ignore the tab and use a clamp on? Well? If the tab breaks off you just use a clamp on,,can you save the frame this way?

there's nothing particularly wrong with a braze-on derailleur tab. There's just nothing particularly right with it either. If your seat tube is oversized or not round, then you don't have any other choice. If it's not, then there's no real reason not to use a clamp on derailleur.

of braze-on front derailleurs is that -- if they break -- your frame might be ruined (depending on the material). I almost bought a Bianchi Alloro last year until I noticed that the front der. braze-on was cracked. The owner (seller) didn't even realize this. Since it was an aluminum frame, it couldn't be fixed. Fortunately he was able to get the frame replaced under warranty, but he had to dissemble the bike and ship the frame back to California where he bought it.

With a steel frame, a broken braze-on could be fixed, but it would mess up your paint job in the process.
