I am a poor grad student who has discovered road cycling and am looking to buy my first road bike. I am looking for a new road bike in the $500.oo range, I realize this is the bottom end but its all I can afford. I am looking at the Giant OCR 3 and GT ZR5, both bikes with aluminum frames. Any thoughts on which I should choose?

take the 500 and buy something much better used. There is no reason to buy new if you have someone to help you make sure you get something good. If you just want to ride around then you'll be ok; but if you get seriously into riding you will be wanting something better within a few months. Don't waste the money now. You can easily get a good used Shimano 105 bike for 500.

Good advice from nestorl, but as he says, have someone help you since this is your first bike.

I agree with your previous reply. Buy used. I sold a full campy super record, ciocc bicycle for $600. It was mint!
