Chamois dictates quality. Santini, Nalini, Voler, very good $50 range shorts. Assos and Castelli, no experience, better be good for the price. Gimmick shorts, Performance or HFS/Nashbar avoid. The goo creates pressure points or pools in the seat cutouts or the fluid leaks from the bladder and the shorts are done. MHO&E.

I hear a lot of comments about Castelli's Progetto Y2k bibs being better than ... well, you know, but for my money Performance's top-of-the-line Elite bibs/shorts are the best buy out there. They have the same type of chamois found in Garneau's top line (blue, with ribbed channels, wings, etc.) and they cost less than half of what the big boys charge. They are really world class and the most comfortable I've ever worn. (I just bought two more bibs, one blue and one black, for less than $100 at one of their stores, but the same deal applies online, I think.)
I agree that Performance's most "popular" (according to them) line, the gel shorts, are lousy. They feel like you're wearing a diaper and like everything else gel, they create unwanted pressure points.
Of course, it's based on what feels good to you. Good luck!
