|How do you know when its time to replace tires? I have Michelin Axial Pros, with about 700 miles. I know I should get a lot more miles thaan this, but they are very beat up, side cuts, etc. I've not had any flats and the tire/tube hold pressure well. Other than outright holes, when should they be replaced?|

|When you look at cuts, scrapes and holes, make a distinction between the rubber part of the tire and the thread (casing) part of the tire. Rubber cuts are harmless - just dig out the offending glass- or metal sliver if it's still in there. Thread cuts are NOT harmless. If the threads (best visible in the sidewalls) are cut, the tire is ready to blow. Ignore thread cuts at your own risk - be ready to steer out a blowout at a 40 mph descent. It can be done, but you need expert bike handling skills.|

|Axial Pros have a reputation for being easily cut. They are well regarded for their riding performance but I stopped using them because they cut so easily.
Jacques comment is well taken. Cuts that don't penetrate to the casing shouldn't cause harm.
I also keep an eye on the tire's profile. That is, do I see it wearing flat on the edge that touches the road? This is just normal wear but when it gets worn flat enough then you're making too much contact with the road and increasing the rolling resistance.
Axial Pros don't do that much but a lot of other brands do.

|my Axial Pros go about 2500 miles before they wear out. I just recently replaced a rear Axial Pro that I rode a little too long--the brown casing was showing through the green center stripe. The sidewalls and road surfaces occasionally develop to small nicks and cuts, but, as the other poster says, if the casing isn't harmed, I don't sweat it. |
By the way, when my rear tire wears out, I put a new tire on the front and move the front to the rear. Just as with my car,
I worry more about a front tire blow out than a rear one.
