Im thinking of geting a trainer for riding inddors? WHat woud you guys recommend, huh? I want to kep in shape over the winter time.

Just got a Cycle-ops Fluid2 trainer. Works great. Gives me good resistance in any gear, at any rpm. Kicked my butt first time I used it.

Rollers give you a more realistic riding feel and help with your form, but are more difficult to learn to use at first. No zoning out on them.

I just tried out my bike on a friend's rollers for the first time this weekend. She has it set up next to a wall. So I get on, holding onto the wall, clip in and start pedaling. Little wobbly at first but soon I'm spinning along. So I ask her to throw on a Tom Petty CD - loud. Now I'm really spinning along when suddenly I get an itch. I leaned down to scratch the top of my foot, lose my balance and down I go on my spandex-covered butt to the tune of "Free Fallin'" Power of suggestion?

Rollers take a little getting used to.

I could be a little tired and stressed out. But since I am a guy I would never admit to it.

I don't think you do stupid things, I think you are smart and adventurous and set a good example for the rest of us.

Just make sure you have a fan....or be prepared to soak in your sweat...Anyone whose been on a trainer/rollers can back me up on this.

change your (cycling) life. And, unless you're a monster and need huge resistance, don't let anyone tell you that you can't get a workout on rollers; you can.
This is a FAQ.
Trainer: Variable resistance, can do low cadence/high intensity mashing, can zone out, can get out of your seat (easily), can adjust grade to mimic body position for climbing, can ruin your skewers, can crack your frame (although the last two are unlikely if you use just a little bit of common sense, they are not impossible, based on anecdotal evidence from this board, with the right (wrong?) skewers, frame, and mishap).
Rollers: Improve spin/stroke, cadence, refine balance, improve bike-handling. Unless you get specialized attachments, resistance is varied through gearing only (the faster the tires turn, the more energy you lose to tire deflection). Great for aerobic training, perfectly fine for anaerobic training, recognizing that you can't do low cadence, high resistance training (but cranking along in a 53-11 at 90-100 rpm gives enough resistance to send me into anaerobic hell). Can't zone out (but, less boring). You will fall, but the things that you will learn to avoid falling will, I promise you, carry you through to the next level of cycling.
Pick your poison. Personally, I believe that trainers are good for either the novice who doesn't aspire to more or the expert who knows exactly what he wants to train on in ADDITION to the skills he's already developed. For the vast majority of us, I think that rollers are both necessary and sufficient.

200 lbs. So, skip the banana splits, 22 oz steaks, and steroids, sister. And you want your frame to be heavier than air -- no sub-2 lb aluminum-foil, Doug-Sloan specials.
I also think that most skewers work just fine, and you would know pretty quickly if yours won't.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I said, "anecdotal," not "credible anecdotal."

say that there aren't others that will work, but, for me, I'd rather spend $400 once than $200 and THEN $400. I just went for it. They're great. I've got the standard Kreitler model; if you're a young buck concerned about maximum strength, for more resistance, you may wish to consider the smaller rollers (greater tire deflection). I was sort of encouraged to think about the ones with the plastic end caps -- same bearings, same roller surface -- but then I learned that the issue is whether the plastic will deform from the belt and it probably won't but who needs to worry about that. I figure these will be in my will.

Interestingly enough, I don't use a trainer during the winter. I have a Concept II Rowing machine. For the the time spent, it provides a better workout than cycling. It exercises all the major muscle groups, primarliy the upper body where I need it the most. I keep in shape arobically, and it really helps me with my position. I might add though, I can usually ride through the winters here in Ca, I just switch to cross training, sometimes I can only get in a couple of days a week on my bike.

The erg really does give a great workout. Arms, legs, abs, back, EVERYTHING gets a workout!

DINOSAUR, are/were you in crew? I used to row 2 years ago during college. Just row once a week for fun now.

No, I never rowed crew. I stumbled on the erg when I worked out in a gym during the late 80's. I kept on telling myself that I needed to get one of those things so I could workout at home and skip the gym. I ended up purchasing one in 1990 and used it consistantly for a number of years. I think it provides a better all-around workout than cycling, but it gets pretty boring working out inside staring at the computer. Cycling is fun, the Concept II hurts, but I guess no pain, no gain....

Get some Minoura rollers and be done with it. I've used mine on/off for close to 20 years. Still work like new.

Rollers are really good for general fitness, balance, cadance, and are especially good for 'recovery' rides.

i use minoura rollers and they work great...the first time u use rollers it is like riding on a pond of ice..it takes a lot of concetration at first but the more u use them the easier it becomes...great workout...u know you have conquered them when u can stand and spin....ride safe

I tried trainer riding once.....once. It was actually quite successful, as it got me interested in swimming and provided the extra inspiration I needed to ride outside in the winter. It would probably help me out in the long run, but it's just too darn boring.
