I just read that Mapei signed Miguel Martinez to a three-year road contract. A few months ago, we had a flame war that touched on the relative strengths of roadies and mtbers, and several people express hope that Miguel might switch to the road at some point. I wouldn't be surprised to see him follow in his father's tire tracks and take the polka-dot jersey at the Tour. I hope he will do that and add some life to a Euro-pro scene that seems in need of personality. Is anyone else excited about this?

I think it's great that he will be on the road next year. Little Mig can climb with the best of them, just like his dad Mariano. I also think he is a huge improvement for Mapei over Michelle Bartoli who they sent packing in the same press release.

It looks like Cadel Evans might do that same turn too in near future. Man, these two guys can be a real killers, when that pack hits the mountains...

Cadel Evans has raced several road-races before what i understand. He do a lot of training on roadbike and of course race for Saeco.
Don't really know if i can agree that Miguel would ad some personality, but he shure could be a great climber.

is already pro for Saeco and has won three pro road races this year including a hill climb TT where he beat Lance and many other great climbers. Not many guys can do road and MTN with that much success in both. Of course Lance had just won the Tour so I'll cut him some slack.

I had the opportunity to see him on several occasions recently, interacting with fans, fellow competitors, sponsor and team representatives, and race officials, and this is not the impression I got. Where do you get your info?

I was wondering the same thing. I've never seen him in person, but he always seemed pretty animated and enthusiastic when I saw him racing on TV. You've got to love a guy who crushes the competition with a big, happy grin on his face. Now that he's won everything he can on the mtb, it's time for a new challenge.

I saw him a few years ago at a race, and he struck me as being painfully shy. It looks like he has gotten a little more comfortable with the spotlight over the past couple of years. He actually looks pretty animated on TV now.
