Got my new bike(13 posts)

Since I crashed my Bianchi Veloce, I've been waiting over a month for my new bike. It arrived yesterday:

Frame by Carl Strong (Colubus Foco tubing with Carve Carbon Seat Stays)

Reynolds Ouzo Pro Fork
Thomson seat post and stem
Chris King Headset
ITM Super Pro 225 Bars
Campagnolo Chorus Racing Triple Groupset
Terry Ti Fly Seat

I threw on the wheels I had, which are Mavic Open Pros with DT Swiss Spokes on Chorus hubs.

I had been riding a 1983 Fuji Touring Bike for the past month. Took the Strong out for 40 miles yesterday and 55 today.

Wow

It is the best combination of "horizontally stiff and vertically compliant" I ever ridden. Translation: you can stomp on the pedals and it doesn't flex, it just accelerates, but it is the most comfortable road bike I've ever ridden, helped (I believe) in no small part by the carbon seat stays. They really smooth out the ride. I don't think it's as stiff as an aluminum frame, but it is pretty close to the ideal bike for centuries, yet it climbs great too.

For those who might be in the market for a stem, I URGE you to check out the Thomson road stem. No welds, constructed from one block of aluminum, beatifully milled. Absolutely solid, no flex, beautiful to look at.

And Carl Strong builds a beautiful, CUSTOM frame for what a lot of people charge for "off-the-rack". I've already got the seat dialed in, I just need to try one less spacer on the stem and I think it will be perfect.

I'm a happy camper. I'll post a picture when I stop riding long enough...

you've pretty much described the bike on my 2002 agenda - Strong - Foco - carbon stays - Ouzo Pro. post a picture when you get one, I'll bet it's a beaut. congrats!

Congratulations, what a sweet ride!! I went to the Strong web page and the frames look absolutely terrific. Have you got any idea about your new frame's weight? How about the whole bike as equipped?

Completely set up, WITH speedplay pedals (the steel ones, not ti) water bottle cages, bell and cateye cyclometer, the weight is a little over 20 pounds. I can't say it's a real lightweight, but it's a couple of pounds lighter than my Chromoly Bianchi Veloce similarly equipped.

Sounds like a very reasonable weight for the smooth ride of steel and composite. I hope you enjoy it for many miles!

I want a new bike
One that won't make me sick
One that won' make me crash my car
Or make me feel three feet thick

I want a new bike
One that won't hurt my head
One that won't make my mouth too dry
Or make my eyes too red

One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you

I want a new bike
One that won't spill
One that don't cost too much
Or come in a pill

I want a new bike
One that won't go away
One that won't keep me up all night
One that won't make me sleep all day

One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you
I'm alone with you baby

I want a new bike
One that does what it should
One that won't make me feel too bad
One that won't make me feel too good

I want a new bike
One with no doubt
One that won't make me talk too much
Or make my face break out

One that won't make me nervous
Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when I'm with you
When I'm alone with you

New bikes are great! Sometimes, it IS about the bike. Enjoy.

After riding a 1983 Touring Fuji, which weighs 29 pounds fully loaded, I'm inclined to agree with you.

I think it's not about the bike until you get a much better bike!

So true...

Every time I get back on my road bike (Lemond BA) after riding my clunky, crappy old hybrid on errands, I FLY!!

My road bike is a part of me, I feel like one with the bike. The old Raliegh is just a THING that I sit on and pedal. Though it does carry my 18 month old daughter, and she loves it.

Dan

P.S. Today I was killing time while the car was being serviced. Took my daughter into a LBS to kill time and drool over the Pinarellos and Ibis'. She started pointing and saying, "Bike! Bike! Bike!" and "Hat! Hat!" when she saw the Bell kid's helmets. You should have seen the smiles on Daddy's face :)

I want my royalty check. Remember what happened with Ray Parker Jr. and that Ghostbusters song?

Glad to see a happy biker, sad to see a fellow Bianchi go.
